Douglas fir beetle. Found in a standing tree this afternoon. The beetle moves in when trees are already stressed and declining. They are "secondary" pests in most cases—opportunistic decomposers that target compromised hosts rather than healthy, vigorous ones.
The red stuff on the bark is called frass. Its the 1st indicator that let me know a bug was in there. Its the wood fiber and excrement of the larvae.
I chopped the bark away to find the "gallery" or tunnel it created and found an active larvae in the tree.
The tree is compromised and will be removed.

Sorry everyone. No "There's 3H?", today either. We're way out on private property. Next Monday is Memorial Day so we'll bump it to Tuesday next week and maybe do a bigger prize. Have a wonderful Monday.
