It breaks our hearts to be called in to repair this custom imported marble shower only four years after it was installed even with proper maintenance from the homeowner.
Unfortunately, this shower is already showing signs of significant failure and, in an ideal world, should be completely torn out and rebuilt. Our goal is to make the best repairs possible and help extend its service life for the homeowner.
During our inspection, we found numerous installation issues, including:
• Inconsistent grout joint widths, resulting in areas where the grout was installed too thin and became prone to premature cracking and failure
• Improper tile spacing and layout that contributed to grout cracking, separation, and premature failure throughout the shower
• Excessive lippage and uneven tile alignment due to the apparent lack of a tile leveling system during installation
• Incorrect sealant products that have begun to mold and deteriorate
• Grout that was never properly sealed
• Grout stained from workers walking on the marble pan with dirty work boots during installation
• Excessive grout haze left on the tile surfaces
• Scratches and damage to the imported marble caused during installation and loose/chipped tiles.
• Multiple workmanship concerns that should not be present in a premium custom shower
A custom tile shower is one of the most expensive and technically demanding areas of a home. The difference between a shower that lasts 20+ years and one that begins failing after only a few years often comes down to proper installation practices.
If you're hiring a tile contractor, here are a few things to watch for:
✅ Proper waterproofing systems such as Schluter®, Wedi®, or other approved waterproofing methods. RedGard® can also be an effective system when installed correctly.
✅ Proper tile layout and planning before installation begins.
✅ Use of tile leveling systems and spacers to maintain consistent grout joints, proper spacing, and reduce lippage.
✅ Quality edge finishing materials such as Schluter trim profiles where appropriate.
✅ Proper grout selection, installation, cleaning, sealing, and maintenance procedures.
✅ Protection of finished surfaces during construction to prevent staining, scratching, and other damage.
The cheapest bid and or an incompetent contractor is rarely the least expensive option in the long run. Quality craftsmanship, proper waterproofing, and attention to detail matter when you're investing thousands of dollars into a custom shower.
We're doing everything we can to help this homeowner salvage their investment and get more years out of this beautiful marble shower.
