Bagworms: Small Pest, Big Damage

If you're noticing brown, pinecone-like bags hanging from your arborvitae, juniper, cedar, or other evergreens, you're likely dealing with bagworms.

These pests may look harmless, but they can quickly defoliate and weaken trees and shrubs—sometimes causing permanent damage or even plant death if left untreated.

✅ What to look for:
• Hanging spindle-shaped bags attached to branches
• Browning or thinning foliage
• Damage primarily on arborvitae, juniper, spruce, and cedar

⏰ Timing is everything.
The best time to treat bagworms is when they are young and actively feeding. Once they mature and seal themselves inside their bags, treatments become much less effective.

We had the opportunity to spend some time out at the North Liberty Community Pantry this week to help with a few projects around the site. Our team, with the help of others in the community, were able to remove several trees and stumps to help make the space more usable in the future. What could have been a long project turned into quick work with the help of the community and we are proud to be part of this community!
