The bed frame is finally finished!

Our 5 part series comes to an end.

This project was a lot of fun and came with a lot of learning experiences for me. It’s definitely the nicest thing I’ve made so far! Thank you everyone for tagging along with me during this build! I hope you enjoyed as much as I did! The Rubio Monocoat oil plus 2C finish came out great and it was so easy to prep and use. We used the pure color to keep as much of that natural tone as we could.

What’s next?

I’m going to building a nightstand to accompany this bed frame! That’s definitely going to be a challenge! But, I’m very excited to knock it out. I’ll be using mortis and tenon joinery for the first time. Also, this piece will be the first piece I’ve ever built with a drawer. Stay tuned!

Participated in my first woodworking class!

I learned how to cut dovetail joinery! I did ok but, it was a blast and I’m definitely looking forward to doing another class. Thanks for being such an amazing host! I met a lot of awesome people!

Part 3️⃣ of 5️⃣ is here! 🙌

The bed frame build is coming along beautifully — headboard and footboard components are officially done! 🛠️

Next up: routing the joinery, installing hardware, and bringing it all together 👀

Then it’s finish time… still deciding what to use, but it’s going to look amazing either way 😁

Thanks for following along!

Part 2️⃣ of our 5️⃣-part build series for my daughter’s new red oak bed frame is complete! 🔨🪵

In this reel, I’m showing how we rip all of our lumber down on the table saw to the exact widths needed for the posts and panels for the headboard and footboard. Then I walk through how I handle the panel and post glue-ups to get everything ready for assembly.

Next up in Part 3️⃣:
We’ll be assembling the headboard and footboard, cutting the side rails to length, and prepping them for the bed hardware.

Stay tuned to see this build come together, and thanks for following along! 🙌

Here’s Part 1️⃣ of my 5️⃣ part series showing how I build a full-size bed frame for my daughter, from rough-cut red oak lumber!

My first task is to mill all the lumber to S2S or surfaced two sides.

Up next, I’ll be straight line ripping these boards and then taking them to the final width on the table saw.

After that, I’ll be building the head board and foot board! Stay tuned and thanks for watching!

This monster end grain cutting board is an absolute beast! Crafted from rich black walnut and cherry, measuring 18” x 24” and a full 2” thick — this one is built for some serious kitchen action.
Made this beauty for my dad, who plans on putting it to work carving turkey! 🦃 He requested an extra-large juice groove to keep those counters spotless, and we topped it off with brass feet from Campfire Woodworks to really make it stand out.
Safe to say… we can’t wait for dinner 😎🍽️

2025 was full of highs and lows for us. We lost my grandfather on the Tuesday before Christmas. He was such an influential person in my life and so many others lives. Those who knew him, will never forget him and those that loved him as family or friend, will miss him forever. I helped finish his last project, a red oak dining table for a very good friend. It was an emotional roller coaster to get it finished as you can imagine but, I’m so thankful that I got to take care of this for him as he asked me to before he passed. I’ve learned so much from him and I’m happy I have a lifelong passion for woodworking so I can, in a way, be with him often.

We hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving filled with family, friends, and delicious food!
This year has been anything but predictable. I had a lot planned for the business, but we ultimately had to step back almost completely to maintain a healthy work–life balance.

Between learning how to be a parent to two wonderful (and very energetic) kids, and starting a new position in my military career, time has been limited to say the least.

Now that the dust has finally started to settle, I’m excited to get back into the shop and start working on new projects. I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to finish before Christmas, but I’m definitely going to try to get some new items added to our website.

Last year, I focused heavily on learning the “business” side of things—sales, advertising, running a website—and I feel much more confident now. So this coming year, I plan to focus on improving the shop itself, streamlining processes to reduce costs, and learning more advanced woodworking techniques. I’m really excited to show you all what Bala’s Custom Woodworks is capable of!

Thank you all for your continued support and interest in our small business.

We wish you a very happy holiday season!
