Understanding and Managing Aphids on Plants
What Are Aphids?
Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects in the superfamily Aphidoidea that feed by inserting their piercing mouthparts into tender plant tissues to extract sap. Typical adults measure 1/16 to 1/8 inch long and have pear-shaped bodies, long antennae, and two tube-like structures called cornicles projecting from their rear ends.
Aphid coloration varies by species and can include green, yellow, brown, red, gray, or black. Winged forms appear when colonies become overcrowded or food quality declines, allowing them to disperse and establish new infestations on other plants.
Signs of Aphid Infestation
Early detection limits damage. Look for these symptoms:
Sticky or shiny residue (honeydew) on leaves and stems.
Distorted, curled, or stunted new growth.
Yellowing or premature leaf drop.
Presence of sooty mold (black fungal growth) on honeydew-coated surfaces.
Clusters of tiny pear-shaped insects on the undersides of leaves or at stem bases.
Ants farming aphids or tending honeydew droplets nearby.
Aphid Life Cycle and Spread
Aphids reproduce rapidly—females give live birth to nymphs without mating, and each female can produce 40–60 offspring in 7–10 days. Multiple generations per season lead to explosive population growth. Overcrowding or plant stress triggers the production of winged offspring that migrate to fresh hosts, perpetuating the infestation cycle.

Manual Controls
Hand-remove aphids by gently rubbing leaves and stems between gloved fingers to crush or dislodge them.
Use a strong jet of water from a hose to knock aphids off foliage; repeat every few days to prevent re-establishment.
Natural Sprays and Plant-Based Solutions
Soapy water: Mix 1–2 teaspoons of mild liquid soap per quart of water; spray thoroughly on infested areas to break down aphid waxy coatings.
