In the mid-19th century, a number of optimists campaigned to have their own county, partitioned off from Steuben. As a sort of consolation prize, a second Steuben County court district was established, with Corning as its seat. A court district needs a court house, and this is it, built in 1854 in the Public Park. Half a century later, rather than pay for repairs and updates on the original building, a new structure was approved. The Drake Company got the contract in 1903, at a bid of $25,000. The new courthouse (no longer used as such) still stands in what we now call Canfield Park, but not on the same footprint as the original, which was demolished.
