Known for his forward-thinking mindset and passion for EMS improvement, Albert believes Corpus Christi has the potential to become one of the best fire-based EMS systems in the state through innovation, teamwork, and action from everyone involved.

Albert Villarreal has served the Corpus Christi Fire Department for 25 years and currently serves on C[1]Shift at Station 15, working across the medic, ladder, squad, and brush apparatus. Throughout his career, he has become known not only as an outstanding paramedic, but also as a mentor, educator, and strong advocate for advancing EMS within the department.

Albert originally entered EMS while taking an EMT-Basic course as preparation for nursing school, but everything changed after his first ride-out with a CCFD medic unit. “I was hooked,” he said. Nearly 26 years later, he says the fire department continues to offer something unmatched: “Family, excitement, something new every shift, camaraderie, and the thrill of the unknown when the tones drop.”

In addition to serving the community in the field, Albert teaches future paramedics at Del Mar College.

For him, the greatest reward is knowing he can play even a small role in the success of the next
generation. His teaching philosophy centers around growth, humility, and learning from mistakes. “I do not allow the word ‘fail’ in our classroom,” he said. “If we allow ourselves to learn and grow from that fall…that’s falling forward.”

Albert believes high-quality patient care requires paramedics to think beyond skills alone. “We must be clinicians; not technicians,” he said.

What continues to motivate him after so many years may surprise people: “Fear,” he explained. Not fear that weakens confidence, but the kind that quietly pushes him to keep learning, preparing, and improving for the moments when patients need him most.

Outside of work and teaching, Albert enjoys spending time with his wife and family, whether it’s finding a local hole-in-the-wall restaurant or playing golf with his boys and fellow members of the department.

As part of EMS Week, we are proud to recognize Firefighter II EMS Albert Villarreal for his dedication to patient care, mentorship, education, and continued commitment to the Corpus Christi community.
