Fall is the best time of year to plant grass seed! The autumn season comes with a mix of warm soil and cooler air, perfect for planting and allowing time for the new grass roots to develop before winter sets in. It is also a good time to overseed and topdress with organic matter to established lawns to build stronger deeper roots for winter, resulting in a thicker, greener lawn next spring. The trick to top dressing is using enough peat(natures all organic compost) that it aids the soil without smothering the existing grass. A quarter inch layer is enough that the grass crowns can elongate to adapt to the slightly higher soil surface.
