From old carpet glue to hand-rubbed concrete 👀
This front patio belonged to two local teachers who have been working their way through renovating their home. After tackling the rest of the house, it was finally time to do something with the old concrete entry.
And this slab definitely made us work for it.
Years of carpet adhesive, staining, and wear were hiding the original concrete. Adhesive removal requires a different approach than normal concrete grinding, so we started with a PCD diamond cup wheel to mechanically remove the old glue. Once the adhesive was gone, we switched back to diamond tooling to carefully open the pores of the concrete and prepare it for stain.
Because this wasn’t going to be covered with a thick coating, the prep mattered even more. With a stain-and-seal system, the concrete itself becomes part of the finished design, so we wanted to remove the contamination without unnecessarily roughening the surface.
By the time prep and pressure washing were finished, it was late afternoon and temperatures were pushing the upper working range of the stain. We tested a small area before committing to the entire patio and I’m glad we did.
The concrete was simply too hot. The stain was absorbing almost immediately, which wouldn’t give us enough working time to create the hand-rubbed effect we were after.
Rather than force it, we called it for the day and came back the following morning when conditions were right.
That made all the difference.
Using light and dark gray stains, we hand-worked the color into the concrete to create natural variation and an aged, antiqued appearance rather than a flat, uniform color. We finished everything with three coats of protective sealer, bringing out the depth in the stain and leaving the patio with a subtle protective sheen.
The result is still unmistakably concrete just with a completely different character.
Sometimes the best part of craftsmanship is knowing when not to keep going.
If your concrete is stained, discolored, or just outdated, replacement isn’t always the only option.
