Sometimes I enjoy tedious work... but not yesterday. Last year's grape juice preservation seemed to take forever. Very thankful for people like who produce helpful content, showing others how to streamline the process. 9.5 lbs of grapes (from only one plant, and a little more still to come) became 7 quarts of ready to strain & drink juice.

There's still been lots to do in a Sabbath year. Grapes are coming on, and last year's grape juice is being turned into jelly.

And yeah...I pick them too early, but I use them only for canned juice. If I wait until everything is ripe, the first ones will fall to the ground or be eaten up by the birds. Something got every single grape from the back yard.

Chickens lay down when they feel safe. After standing on my lap three nights in a row, tonight Lavender laid down. I feel like a TRUE chicken farmer!

Two of them flew up and landed on my shoulders. Pretty soon I'm going to have to start singing Mary Poppins' "Feed the Birds"

This is Lavender. She's is a lavender Orpington. This one actually likes me!

What does a Sabbath year look like on an urban farm? It looks like God giving you one of your absolute favorites through a volunteer ground cherry (aka husk cherry) plant. Actually, 4 of them are growing around the place. And those are volunteer tomatillos too!
*
It looks like picking blackberries for your breakfast, after you finish the morning chicken chores.
*
And, it looks like finding a good price on organic plums, (which for some unexplainable reason you've always wanted to preserve, but haven't) and turning those into canned pie filling, jam, and chutney. No kidding... after tasting each one, I think if I could always have plums, I'd never bother with canning peaches again. Yes, they're THAT good!

It's been good to be back in the kitchen, even if it is at a slow pace. Physically, it's been a rough 12 months for me, but I had a chance to pick up a bushel of peaches and I saw it as the perfect chance to get back into the swing of preservation.
*
One bushel produced 4 quarts of pie filling, 9 half pints, and 2 pints of jam, about 7 quarts of peach sauce (like applesauce), 4 quarts peach sorbet (not pictured), a deep dish peach pie, and still to come, about 7 quarts of peach syrup from the pits and bits.
*
I've also been making bruschetta from all of the fresh tomatoes and basil we've had around here.
*
But probably my favorite thing is that after at least 6 months, maybe more, I finally felt like making my favorite Korean beef bowls.
*
Next up...plums that will be turned into jam, chutney, and possibly, pie filling.

This has been a very bad, discouraging week with a rollercoaster of emotions. Tonight, either a serendipitous accidental delivery happened, or a very sweet friend/neighbor stopped by, just to let me know they care. I'm choosing to believe the latter. 😊

A beautiful morning fit for a delicious homemade breakfast. It might look like strawberry shortcake (& you'd be right!) but I tell myself using English scones instead makes it legal for breakfast, or afternoon tea... whichever you prefer.

The strawberries have been plentiful this year. For that, and much more, I am thankful.

I recently saw a local bakery advertise a seasonal strawberry toast for brunch. I thought, 'I can do that!' Well, given my current situation, WE did that.
*
So here's our variation of strawberry toast, with homegrown strawberries and thyme buds. For the price of a little bread and cream cheese, we just saved more than a few bucks on a delicious breakfast.

Perennial flowers are doing their thing and the baby grapes will be coming along soon.

Yesterday, I pulled up a couple of that grew all winter. They were too small to bother with in the fall, when I wasn't feeling well. I've found several scattered around our yard.

Very thankful to the Lord of the Harvest for, yet again, providing in a Sabbath year.
