Reaching for the pressure washer to clean your paver patio? Technique matters far more than pressure, and the wrong approach strips the joint sand that holds the whole surface together.

The paver industry standard calls for a wide spray nozzle at a low angle, specifically so sand stays in the joints. Point a narrow nozzle straight down at close range and you will blow the joints out no matter what the gauge reads. For most residential patios, a cleaner applied by hand with a brush and a thorough hose rinse works fine.

Two more things worth knowing. That white haze on newer pavers is usually efflorescence, a byproduct of the concrete curing, and it often fades on its own. And sealing is optional for most patios rather than required maintenance.

A small kit on an existing concrete patio, freestanding, with no wiring, is a genuinely good weekend project if you have a helper and basic tools. Nobody needs to pay a crew for that.

It stops being the right call when the pergola attaches to your house, when you want lighting or fans, when the ground slopes or drains poorly, or when you want a size no kit sells. Tying into a roofline safely takes experience, and a footing set wrong in Oklahoma clay shows up as a lean within a season.

If part of your paver patio has settled enough to hold a puddle after rain, the problem is underneath the pavers rather than in them.

Pavers ride on a compacted stone base. When that base was built too thin, was not compacted properly, or got undermined by water, the surface drops with it. The pavers themselves almost never fail.

Here is the part most homeowners do not know. A small amount of settling is completely normal, and the industry standard actually calls for setting pavers slightly high to allow for it. The test is simple. If your patio still sheds rain the way it always did, that is normal. If it collects water, the base has a problem.
