I admire the design of the Tabiat Bridge in Tehran that a young Iranian woman conceived. It has been a unique gathering place as well as a safe transport over a major highway to a Nature Preserve. Will it still be standing when the military conflict ends? See my latest blog, which also features one of my former projects.

A recent trip to Barcelona

Barcelona: Antoni Gaudi created places that delight people Recently, my husband Ted and I traveled to Barcelona, Spain — long on my bucket list of places to see. Barcelona has something in common with Bar Harbor: tourists flock there to enjoy the beauty; to Bar Harbor for its natural beauty, to Ba...

Many older homes in Coastal Maine showcase the Shingle Style architecture, and this isn't by accident. This vernacular style featuring Cedar shingles, abundant in our region, demonstrates remarkable resilience against harsh coastal weather conditions. With proper maintenance—primarily a fresh coat of stain every 10-15 years—these shingles can endure for up to a century, making them the most cost-effective siding solution in the long term....

As your architect, I am a visionary, a detective, and a therapist.

A visionary because I have some talent, and years of training cultivating the talent, to see in 3 dimensions what does not exist yet. I use a variety of tools to help you see your vision as built before a block is laid or studs nailed in place.

A detective because I will research, investigate, and discover the parameters and constraints of your site, the local codes that will apply; and through our questionnaire and meetings, come to understand your lifestyle, needs and dreams for a home.

As we journey together through pre-design discovery: discussing your needs and defining your priorities, then move into actually designing how to fulfill your goals, I’ll become part therapist as I lead us to a design solution that uniquely suits you. Ultimately, your home will offer therapy as it promotes peace, comfort, and well-being.

Haitians have it really bad right now. Life in Haiti is perilous, overrun by dangerous gangs. And too many Haitians who try to leave for safety wind up stateless with no prospect. They are the outcasts of the Western hemisphere.

I'm part of a new effort to give access to healthcare for Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic. We've started a non-profit called Refugio de Salud/Health Refuge for Haitians. We are partnering with Live 2 Serve, an organization committed to providing maternal care. They are ready to build a birthing center. Here's my design for a multi- discipline clinic. We've broken ground!

This project will offer Haitians the dignity of work to build it and run the clinic. Then, it will be a beacon, offering care to those who would have none otherwise.

It will take several years to get to the complete build out shown here, Birthing Center is the middle building. The Ardell Thomas Day Clinic is in front, future expansion is the last building, all separated by courtyards.
