How does your garden grow?

Once upon a rugged rise,
Beneath the ever-watchful skies,
There came a man, of quiet will,
Who shaped the earth and tamed the hill.

Since he’s taken to wielding shears.
He battled brush and thorny death,
With calloused hands and steady gaze,
He carved the slopes through smoky haze.

Newcomer they did call him so,
Yet roots took hold where rivers flow.
With stones he stacked in patient rows,
Retaining walls that steady grow.

He cleared the brambles, wild and grim,
Their thorns no match for Robert’s limb.
Each rock he set, a whispered hymn,
To safety born on Crockett’s rim.

The town observed his quiet might,
As daylight faded into night.
From Vista’s paths to Pomona’s shade,
His hands reshaped the Delta glade.

Though stranger still in village song,
His friendship blossomed swift and strong—
A steward of the hills among,
Where earth and human toil belong.

Yet in the twilight’s haunting breath,
The brambles murmur close to death,
A ghostly call from roots beneath—
A warning held in thorny wreath.

But Robert stands, and will not yield,
His work the shield, the soil the field.
In Crockett’s hills, his fate is sealed—
Along the brambles of the blackberry fields..

What did you do in your garden today?

Do good things and good things happen!

It’s a motto that I truly believe in. When you do something because you want to or for no reason except that you have the tools, you have the ability, and it will benefit more than yourself then it’s a good enough reason to get it done.

I’ve drove past, rode my bicycle past and walked past this section of town where Wanda turns into Loring down by the scout hall, many times. Lately it’s been neglected and the weeds were overgrown and it was really bothering me how much of an eye sore it is.

So I made the decision to get it done. I’m not sure who normally does this work in this area but it doesn’t matter really, because it was bugging me.

We should all aim to do something similar each and everyday, imagine how much goodwill and happiness can be shared and enjoyed by small acts of kindness and service.

We used to be a people who saw something that needed to be done and we did it. Now we’re more prone to post about the problem than do anything about it.

When I grew up I had people that I looked up to as an example of how to carry myself. How to take accountability, step up and volunteer where needed and persevere through the tough days and kick back and enjoy the easy days in life.

I do things like this because I am selfish. I get more out of helping do things that others don’t want do. It took me less than an hour and the feeling that I get after the job is done, empowers me, and gives me a new perspective on what is important to me in life.

I enjoy working with my hands, building up a sweat and making things beautiful with a little bit of TLC. It may not matter to most passers by, but the many dog walkers, joggers, and pedestrians that use this part of town just might appreciate the weeds and debris cleaned up.

When my time has passed I want to be remembered as one of the good guys!

That’s reason enough for me to get er done!

What did you do in your garden today?

Prices so low you cant say no!!

In Crockett, CA (ZIP 94525), the climate around front‑yard lawn conversions is currently very favorable, especially for homeowners preparing to sell. Here’s an updated snapshot of what matters most on the market now:

🌱 1. Increasing Buyer Preference for Drought‑Tolerant Landscaping
• Bay Area homebuyers are strongly favoring low‑water, eco-conscious yards, raising curb appeal and offering functional outdoor living spaces .
• Drought‑tolerant front yards, especially with native plants, mulch, drip irrigation, and lighting, are viewed as desirable and low‑maintenance .

💸 2. Financial Incentives and Rebates
• EBMUD offers a standard rebate of $1/sq ft up to $2,000, with a “super rebate” of $2/sq ft when using native plants, mulch, and compost .
• Contra Costa Water District provides a $200 design-assistance rebate for the front yard consultation .
• Overall, these rebates significantly defray conversion costs and increase buyer appeal.

📈 3. Return on Investment & Resale Value
• Landscaping improvements can boost resale value by 10–20%, especially in areas like Sonoma and by extension, Crockett .
• Bay Area landscaping investments often yield 100%–200% ROI, particularly with curb‑appeal upgrades .
• Moderate improvements—like fresh mulch, drip lines, lighting—are especially cost-effective .

⚠️ 4. Avoid Overcustomization or High‑Maintenance Features
• While simple, clean, drought-friendly landscapes are appealing, overly ornate or high-maintenance, or artificial turf, may backfire in resale value .
“High‑maintenance gardens with intricate designs or rare plants…can be a turnoff.”

🧭 Market Summary
1. Buyers value low‑water, curb‑smart front yards—backed by eco‑friendly design and visual appeal.
2. Rebates from EBMUD and Contra Costa Water District reduce upfront costs, making conversion financially smart.
3. Well-executed lawn-to-garden front yards typically boost market value by 10–20% and significantly enhance curb appeal.
4. Stay away from over-customization—clean, natural, sustainable landscapes are more universally desirable.

✅ What This Means for Sellers in Crockett
• High demand: Today’s buyers expect drought‑wise, well-maintained front yards—even in older neighborhoods.
• Strategic landscaping: Native planting, drip systems, mulch, lighting, and defined walkways offer strong ROI and broad appeal.
• Selling edge: A smartly converted front yard can be a standout feature in a market where average values are around $690K .
• Avoid pitfalls: Skip artificial turf, ultra-custom gardens, or hardscapes that might overwhelm the front yard.

🎯 Final Take

In Crockett today, a thoughtfully executed front-yard lawn conversion is both aesthetically and financially wise. Coupled with available rebates, such updates can deliver solid resale value, reduced water use, and strong curb appeal.

Firebrands and hardening your home!

The Top down approach to reducing combustion and fuel around your home locating the places where fuel and combustion meet is critical to hardening your home from airborne embers (firebrands) which are the overwhelming cause of home ignitions in urban wildfires.

Remember, the following assessment items are for prevention/mitigation measures to be done well in advance of wildfire season.

IMMEDIATE LANDSCAPED AREA TO EXTENT OF THE HOME IGNITION ZONE

Inspect vegetation clearance and crown separation.

Hardening your home encompasses three zones within the home ignition zone.

Your home itself, your yard or property immediately surrounding your home, out from there.

Access to and from your home is also part of the overall picture. Taking simple, easy, and many times small steps to make your home less of a fuel for fire may save your home. It’s the little things that make all the difference.

Zone 1: The Structure Ignition Zone: Your home and the immediate 3 to 5 feet around its periphery, out to 30 feet.
Zone 2: The Firebreak Zone: The area from thirty feet to one hundred feet around your home.
Zone 3: The Reduced Fuel Zone: 100 to 200 feet from your home or structure.

We hardened this home this week as we do yearly! Our job and main goal is to reduce fuel that can ignite, and giving your home the best chance for surviving a wildfire. With a goal of prevention and preparation well in advance of any fire event, the property is now hardened and fire crews can maneuver freely to battle the flames and have the best chance to save your house!

The male Anna’s Hummingbird (Calypte anna) is the fastest hummingbird in the world. Anna’s Hummingbirds are capable of flying up to 385 body lengths per second (approximately 27.3 meters per second). Male Anna’s Hummingbird courtship is a fascinating sight to behold and listen to! These birds aren’t only unique for being incredibly fast flyers – their courtship ritual also includes another element that sets them apart from other hummingbirds. Whilst hovering in mid-air, the male sings a song to their potential mate – the only hummingbird to sing during courtship. Next, they take off into the sky, and then comes the part that earns them the title of the fastest hummingbird – they dive incredibly fast towards their potential mate, abruptly pulling up and causing their wings to create a popping noise. Being able to witness their aerial stunts at great speeds is breathtaking! And of course that’s exactly what they’re hoping for in their attempts to woo potential mates. the females tend to be mainly gray but may have some red on their throat, male Anna’s Hummingbirds are much more striking in appearance, with a stunning magenta pink/red throat patch (called a gorget), with the color often extending over their head. In Crockett we have an abundance of Anna’s Hummingbirds and you can find yourself in the midst of a courtship ritual if you know what to look for. https://youtu.be/mbJvxH2dyGU?si=5fYIYLFfYvpZhnjq

What did you do in your garden today?

“Success is where preparation and opportunity meet.”

That expression “you make your own luck” is a metaphor for making preparations in the path of opportunity;

Work toward your goals every day without fail. The harder you work, the luckier you will become. Stop waiting around for things to work out on their own. They won't. If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you're getting.

I wanted to make a post to hopefully find the ear of lady whom, by chance stopped in at J&L today at around 6pm and received my red note lucky 2$ bill as change. I had just been there and in my haste to take my dog for walk I had to pull out my lucky red note and spend it. I did tell the clerk that it was my lucky bill and I would be back to retrieve it, which I did return within ten minutes and it was gone.

You might say that it’s a sign that my luck has already shifted in that one moment. I would not. I firmly believe that you make your own luck in this world, and the fact that my lucky note is in another’s hands right now is okay with me. I hope that it goes on to bless that lady and brings her the luck and blessings that I have been so fortunate to enjoy the past few weeks.

I can’t complain as Shakespeare said-

“Those that much covet are with gain so fond, For what they have not, that which they possess. They scatter and unloose it from their bond, And so, by hoping more, they have but less; Or, gaining more, the profit of excess. Is but to surfeit, and such griefs sustain, That they prove bankrupt in this poor-rich gain. “

While I’m getting the garden beds ready for planting by amending the soil and preparing my seedlings for transplant, I can imagine the rich bounty of vegetables that I’m sure to gain.

When preparation meets opportunity is when your luck changes.

Make your own luck!

What did you do in your garden today?

Abracadabra!!

I love to clean some bricks!!

Something satisfying about turning a grimey and grungy old brick into a sparkling and clean walkway.

Brick is the very definition of a time-honored building material. Its sheer longevity, insulation properties, and gorgeous appearance make it an outstanding choice and one of the oldest eco-friendly building materials available.
