❄️ Cold Weather Plumbing Tips ❄️
Colder weather is on the way to Acadiana, and now’s the time to get your plumbing ready before those freezing temps hit! Here are a few quick tips to help keep things running smoothly this winter:
💧 Insulate exposed pipes – Pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and garages are most at risk of freezing. A little insulation can prevent big headaches later!
🚰 Let faucets drip – When temps drop below freezing, keep a small trickle of water running to help prevent frozen pipes. For maximum effectiveness, make sure both hot and cold lines are opened slightly.
🚪 Open cabinet doors – Let that warm air flow around your pipes under sinks, especially along exterior walls.
🧊 Disconnect outdoor hoses – Drain and store them, and shut off outdoor spigots before our upcoming freeze. Cover all outdoor faucets with insulated faucet covers. If you don’t have faucet covers, old rags work fine as long as they are covered with plastic sheathing or trash bags to make it waterproof.
🏠 If you have a house on piers, blocking the north side can significantly reduce pipes from freeze breakage.
🔥 Check your water heater – Make sure it’s ready to handle the extra workload this winter!
🔥 Put a heat lamp on all outside appliances, such as tankless water heaters and water wells.
