The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District selected Rachlin Partners to provide Architectural Services for the John Glenn High School Sports Field Replacement Project. The existing track and field no longer served its purpose and was ill-suited to serve the High School’s needs. The existing football field was only used for practice games, while varsity games were played at nearby Excelsior High School. A lack of lighting also limited practice during fall and winter.⁣⁣

Thanks to funding from voter-approved Measure G, the renovated facilities now include a new turf football field and 5,000-seat-capacity bleachers, with 3,800 seats on the Home side and 1,200 seats on the Visitor side, to accommodate school-related events and activities. Students will also enjoy a new track with 9 lanes and ample lighting, allowing night use of the sports field to accommodate varsity home games.⁣⁣

By enhancing opportunities for after-school athletic and extracurricular activities, the District is confident that the first class athletic facilities will increase John Glenn’s student retention and increase enrollment opportunities. The new Sports Field will also serve as a community hub by providing a space where students and the community to come together to celebrate Eagles pride.⁣

Having served as architect for the Bonita Unified School District since 2003, we have been delighted to continue our intimately familiar relationship with their site conditions by providing our programming and schematic design services for the modernization and expansion of their District Office.⁣
⁣
As a part of the scope of work, Rachlin Partners met with various groups to determine the required program spaces, uses, and adjacencies. This information was used for the development of the schematic design.⁣
⁣
Utilizing the information gathered during programming and preplanning meetings, the Rachlin Partners team prepared a preliminary plan for a design that included the reconfiguration of the existing 9,750 SF facility and the addition of 4,000 SF to be used as a board room and the restroom facilities. ⁣

Congrats to Rachlin Partners for winning the Gold Nugget Merit Award 2019 for the Sage Creek Performing Arts Center.

The sprawling arrival plaza segues into a spacious two-story Lobby designed to allow ample room for queuing into the Audience Chamber, which can accommodate groups of more than 200 people for pre- or post-performance gatherings. Also accessible from the lobby is a Black Box / Multi-Purpose room separated from the Audience Chamber by a double wall and corridor to reduce the possibility of noise transfer.

At ground level, the Audience Chamber is entered via light-and sound-lock vestibules at either end of the lobby, providing convenient entrée to Orchestra and Parterre seating. It is designed to seat 340-plus occupants with consideration given to sight lines and acoustics that allow a more intimate experience, thereby improving student attentiveness.

Perforated metal panels on the entry façade are suspended in front of a structural glazed curtain wall to control the amount of sunlight cascading into the building. Presenting a striking modern aesthetic, the screens also offer a unique opportunity to provide large-scale projected signage for event advertising, as well as school identification.
