wHY New ideas begin by first asking wHY wHY began as wHY Architecture in 2004. wHY design? wHY is led by founding Principal Kulapat Yantrasast.

Today, why design engages in projects involving buildings, objects, grounds, and ideas with a team of more than 30 architects, landscape architects, and creative thinkers in Los Angeles, New York and Louisville. This is a question we ask ourselves with every new project, with every design decision made. Our methodology provides prompt and inspiring answers to create delightful outcomes for cultura

l, educational, real estate, commercial and private clients worldwide. Finding new perspectives, challenging assumptions, discovering new efficiencies, understanding relationships, bringing people together, and giving them room to grow characterizes our work. Each project engages a broad range of consultants, from engineers and botanists, to curators and economists, to execute with the highest degree of innovation, quality and intelligence. In less than ten years, we have built the first new green art museum in the world; expanded with the international art market by designing outposts for prominent galleries; explored the intersection of climate, landscape and architecture via an arts education facility for one of the nation’s top colleges; conceptualized and constructed several private residences; and are currently envisioning a new master plan for an historic park where the 1893 World’s Fair took place. In 2012, Yantrasast was recognized as one of the art world’s top influencers and was the first architect to receive the Silpathorn Award for Design from Thailand’s Ministry of Culture in 2009.

The Speed has just been awarded LEED Gold Status by the USGBC. This is the second wHY museum project to earn LEED status, and, big deal, there are only 15 LEED certified museums in the nation!

wHY and Kulapat Yantrasast are beyond excited to be moderating a panel for Frieze Academy with these amazing artists: Kathryn Andrews, Lauren Halsey and Peter Shire — on the topic ‘Blurred Lines’ — discussing the relationship between art and architecture.

Please join us at Spring Place Beverly Hills on Tuesday Jan 15th (from 6:00-8:00) for an insightful (and fun!) discussion. Link and ticket info below:

“These areas altogether cover more than 3/4 of the world, yet there is not sufficient distinction given to them in most museum presentations. In the new design, each region has its own access portal and its own sense of place—inspired by an architectural impression of the region, as well as strong visual connection to other regions and other collections at The Met.”

Kulapat speaking on our work for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York's Rockefeller Wing, which houses the institution’s Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. Excited and honored to work on this seminal project with such a talented team! More info from The New York Times, below:
