The latest 46-day European snow model through December 11th is showing some interesting signals for the start of winter! ❄️

Before anyone gets too excited, these long-range models aren't about predicting exact snowfall totals. They're about identifying potential weather patterns and trends.

What's interesting here isn't necessarily how much snow is showing up, but the signal for an active storm pattern across the Northeast heading into December.

With El Niño potentially playing a role in this winter's weather, it'll be interesting to see how things develop over the next several weeks.

Still way too early to make any predictions, but the early signals are certainly worth watching!

I’ve always believed the way you take care of your own equipment says a lot about how you’ll take care of someone else’s property.

Clean trucks, well-maintained equipment, and pride in the little details. It’s all part of how we do business at Head Light.

Diesel is averaging around $6.45 a gallon in Maine.

Just filling a pickup truck and a mini excavator can cost $350, and that’s only two small pieces of equipment.

Now think about the diesel used to quarry massive rocks, crush them into aggregates, manufacture pavers, transport natural stone and deliver everything to a job site, then install it.

The kicker? Fuel is one of those costs that gets passed along to the consumer at every step.

And here’s something to consider for 2027. Even if diesel prices come down, material prices may continue to rise because much of next year’s inventory is being produced and transported at today.

Just a little perspective on why outdoor living projects are expensive. It’s not just the fuel we burn on the job, it’s the fuel used throughout the entire supply chain.

❄️ SHOCKED AT HOW MUCH YOU'RE PAYING FOR SNOW REMOVAL?

As the weather turns colder and my inbox fills with snow removal inquiries, I thought I'd share a little perspective on why pricing can be all over the map.

Equipment: A new commercial plow truck with a spreader can easily exceed $100,000. Fully equipped municipal 10-wheel plow trucks can exceed $300,000.

Operating costs: MaineDOT actually publishes annual equipment reimbursement rates. Its 2026 schedule lists dump trucks with operators at approximately $74–$111 per hour, before snow removal attachments.

Salt: Some municipalities across the country are reporting road salt price increases of 20–30% or more, with certain contracts exceeding 70%.

Insurance: Here's a big one. Having insurance on a truck doesn't necessarily mean a contractor carries liability coverage for snow and ice removal. Those are two very different things!

Then factor in fuel, maintenance, repairs, equipment depreciation, and being available around the clock.

Here's the reality: Those expenses exist whether Maine gets 5 storms or 25.

Snow removal pricing can vary wildly, and while cheaper doesn't automatically mean worse, there's usually a reason for a significant difference in price.

Before hiring someone, ask what their service includes and whether they carry appropriate commercial snow and ice liability insurance. Don't be afraid to request a Certificate of Insurance.

I'm not sharing this to justify anyone's pricing. I just think homeowners and businesses deserve to understand what goes into professional snow removal.

Either way, I run it the professional way and always will!

Are you TEAM OLD WORLD RUSTIC or TEAM REFINED?

Rustic flagstone has a character you just don’t get with manufactured pavers. The irregular shapes, natural textures, and wider joints give it that old New England look, like it’s been part of the landscape for decades.

It’s not supposed to look perfect. That’s kind of the point.

Others prefer tighter joints and a cleaner, more refined finish.

So which are you choosing for your backyard?

By the time the project wraps up, clients often feel more like family than customers. It’s one of the things we get to really enjoy about this business, and sometimes it’s almost sad packing up and heading to the next job!

I needed some specific stone for a client that wanted a pile that they could use themselves on their own projects after I finished a patio and fire pit for them.
