It’s no secret that this profession can be hot, sweaty, physical and loud. And when you own the business, finding time to actually take a day off isn’t always easy.

Sometimes Mother Nature makes that decision for you.

A rainy day is a chance to let the body recover, catch up on billing and office work, tackle a few things that have been pushed aside, and recharge a little.

After a long stretch of hot, dry weather, we certainly won’t complain about the rain today.

I know a lot of parents are ready for the kids to go back to school… I’m just not one of them.

Some of the best parts of summer are having these two around — riding in the trucks, helping on jobs, and taking pride in what we’re building.

Head Light may be my business, but everything I’m building is really for them.

How do you know if a contractor is gouging you?

Ask friends and neighbors who built their walls and outdoor spaces. For larger retaining walls, don’t be afraid to consult with an engineer. But most importantly, hire a contractor you trust.

The cheapest price isn’t always the best value—and the highest price doesn’t always mean the best work. Ask questions, understand what’s being built, and work with someone you trust to do it right.

A lot of parents look forward to their kids going back to school. For me, it’s always a little bittersweet.

I love having these boys around all summer — whether they’re riding along to a job, helping out, or spending some time washing equipment.

What I love even more is seeing them take as much pride in this equipment and this business as I do. They know we take care of the things we work hard for, and apparently that includes making sure the machines are clean before the next job. 😂

Summer goes by way too fast. I’ll take every day I can get with these guys.

That recently viral video of the retaining wall collapsing seems funny at first—but in reality, it could have been deadly.

It’s hard to know exactly what failed or whether an engineer was involved, but there are clearly some major questions about how that wall was constructed.

This is also why estimates can vary so much between contractors. The most important parts of a retaining wall are often the things you’ll never see—proper base preparation, drainage, backfill and reinforcement.

When someone can do the same project way cheaper, there’s usually a reason. Those little details matter.

There is no better feeling than getting a text on a Saturday night from a client who just wants to say thank you. With the kitchen now installed, the fire pit roaring and all that beautiful outdoor furniture - who wouldn’t want to hang out here? Once the night is done, they also have the hot tub or sauna that was completed last year. Such a cool property and all of this started with a simple phone call two years ago. The client had the ideas but didn’t know to fit it all together. So glad to be a part of these projects!

Boulder Mania in Freeport! This project was never supposed to look new. It’s actually easy to make things look new and perfect, but the owner of this older farm style property was actually looking for the opposite — he wanted it to look like it had been sitting there for 200 years. Being able to make any vision come to life is what sets us apart!

The vision was to make this new modern ADU have an old Maine farm feel on the exterior . Inspired by another natural boulder and reclaimed granite step project we recently completed, we used nearly 60 tons of Maine granite to reshape the land and make it feel like it had always been there. Imperfect chunky granite steps and a stone path now connects the grandparents ADU to grandkids home, how cool is that?

Once the grass comes in and Mother Nature softens the edges, this one is only going to get better.
