For many years UNLICENSED contractors have advertised on sites like Google, Facebook, Nextdoor, Yelp, Angie’s List, etc… They created business websites, logos on trucks , and business cards to falsely hold themselves out to be licensed but were not! Some Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC contractors & Utility Contractors hid behind a company name with an owner not properly licensed in that trade!

Finally with Senate Bill 553 passage, we as members of the State Construction Board (Appointed by the Governor) can go after the bad players and protect the public.

SB 553: (PLB) Professions and Businesses; repeal Chapter 14, relating to electrical contractors, plumbers, conditioned air contractors, low voltage contractors, and utility contractors and enact a new Chapter 14 (Senator Bo Hatchett, Republican, 50, House Sponsor: Devan Seabaugh, Republican, 34th) Senate Passed/Adopted By Sub, House Passed/Adopted Repeals and replaces Georgia’s existing construction licensing law (Chapter 14 of Title 43) and restructures oversight under a new State Construction Industry Licensing Board .

What’s new summarized: The state construction board can now shut down illegal businesses not holding the proper licenses without jumping through hoops!
The construction board will be responsible for investigating unlicensed practice or improper advertising, which are punishable by fines or misdemeanor charges.

If you are uncertain if a contractor is licensed Use the new GOALS site below:

Go to : GOAL.SOS.GA.GOV
Scroll down to : Profession type
(plumber - electrician- hvac, etc)
Type in first and last name of your contractor then hit enter.

If no records are found, verify name and ask company you’re dealing with for their license number. If they don’t want to provide or you verify name and still nothing, it is most likely not a good sign.

Today is National Backflow Prevention Day!

"National Backflow Prevention Day is observed on August 16 every year. The purpose of the holiday is to recognize and honor backflow preventers, the professionals who ensure our available water supply is free of toxins, waste, harmful chemicals, and other contaminants. The holiday also aims to spread awareness about the importance of backflow prevention and how the technology is used. The day was first observed on August 16, 2021, to commemorate the tragic backflow incident on the same day in 1933 at the Chicago World Fair."

Let's talk about RESIDENTIAL IRRIGATION! It's important to have a testable backflow prevention device in place. A testable device will help protect both your home and the main water system from the potential of a nasty backflow incident. Code specifications state that you can be held responsible if an incident occurs and your property is determined to be the source.

BACKFLOW INCIDENT: Southgate, Michigan
"On October 1, 1991, two homeowners in the City of Southgate, Michigan, found parasitic worms in their water. One homeowner found the worms swimming around in his bathtub when he started filling the tub for his child. He also found rust and other debris in his water. The Wayne County Health Department determined that water had backflowed through a residential irrigation system into the public water system.
There was a water main break, which caused a vacuum in the public water system. The vacuum in the public water system sucked some water--and some nematodes--from the irrigation system into the public water system.
Crews from the City's Department of Public Services opened fire hydrants and flushed all the water mains located three blocks north and south of where the backflow incident occurred. Analysis of subsequent water samples collected by the Department of Public Services showed no detectable coliform bacteria.
The County cited the owner of the irrigation system for improper installation of the system. The contractor that this resident employed to install the irrigation system did not have a City permit and used a "cheap" atmospheric vacuum breaker."
