💧 Failed drainage system out. Proper drainage system in.

This homeowner was dealing with water collecting in the yard and an existing drainage system that was no longer getting the job done.

We removed the failed system and replaced it with a new setup featuring:
✔️ Approximately 70’ of solid 6” SDR-35
✔️ 18” and 12” surface drains
✔️ Atrium dome grates
✔️ River rock surrounds
✔️ Proper grading around each collection point
✔️ Dedicated discharge outside the fence line

The underground work is complete, the yard has been shaped and restored, and all that’s left is seed and straw.

This is what a drainage system should look like before it gets covered up. 👀💧

With the trenches still open, you can see exactly what goes into building a permanent underground drainage system: properly sized catch basins, solid SDR-35 pipe, established slope, and dedicated discharge lines designed to move water efficiently away from the problem areas.

Once this system is backfilled and the yard is restored, almost all of this work will disappear underground—but this is the part that determines whether the system actually performs for years to come.

The pipe you don’t see matters just as much as the drain you do.

🚨 This is why we’re not big fans of corrugated pipe for permanent underground drainage systems.

This homeowner was dealing with water collecting throughout the backyard, and the existing drainage system simply wasn’t getting the job done.

We exposed the old corrugated pipe, and it’s coming out. 👋

In its place, we’re installing a completely new system featuring:

💧 An 18-inch surface drain
💧 A 12-inch surface drain
💧 Approximately 70 feet of solid 6-inch SDR-35 pipe
💧 Properly established slope throughout the system
💧 A dedicated discharge outside the fence line

A drainage system is only as good as what’s happening underground. Proper pipe sizing, slope, collection points, and a reliable discharge all matter if you want to actually move water instead of just giving it somewhere else to sit.

💧 Another complete drainage system in the ground.

This property needed a better way to manage both roof runoff and surface water around the home.

For this project, we installed nearly 200 feet of 6-inch SDR-35 and 145 feet of 4-inch SDR-35, connecting:
• 4 catch basins
• 7 gutter downspouts
• Cleanouts at each downspout
• 2 separate controlled discharge points

We also bored underneath the existing front walkway, allowing us to continue the drainage system without removing or replacing the concrete.

At the rear of the property, each side of the system terminates at a reinforced rip rap outlet designed to control the discharge and help prevent erosion.

The underground work is finished and the yard has been graded back out. The homeowner's landscaper will be installing new sod and plantings next week to complete the restoration.

Once that's done, most of what you see in this walkthrough will disappear—but the drainage system underneath will continue doing its job every time it rains.

🌧️ Big rain overnight—and this drainage system got put to the test before we even finished installing it.

The right side of the house is mostly complete and backfilled, and now we’re working our way across the front and toward the left side of the property.

One of today’s challenges was getting our drainage line under the existing concrete walkway without tearing it out. We bored underneath the walkway, allowing us to keep the system moving across the property while leaving the concrete intact.

This is what a comprehensive drainage project looks like. We’re not just burying a few pieces of pipe—we’re connecting multiple collection points and gutter downspouts into a complete underground system designed to capture stormwater, move it efficiently across the property, and discharge it in a controlled location.

A lot of the work disappears once it’s underground, but as the layout comes together, you can really start to see the scale of this system.

On this project we:

✔️ Built a 50-foot dry creek bed with 4–12" river rock

Water always finds a path. Our job is making sure it's the right path.

This project starts with reshaping the drainage swale, removing debris that's blocking flow, and constructing a 50-foot dry creek bed with geotextile fabric and 4–12" river rock. The result is a long-lasting drainage solution designed to safely convey stormwater while helping protect the property from erosion.

🌧️ When water keeps taking the same path, erosion only gets worse.

Years of stormwater runoff had been cutting through this property, washing away soil every time heavy rain moved through.

Instead of continuing to patch the damage, we addressed the source of the problem.

We constructed a 65-foot dry creek bed to capture and safely convey the runoff through the property. The channel was properly excavated and graded, lined with heavy-duty geotextile fabric, and finished with river rock to create a durable system that helps control water while protecting the surrounding soil from further erosion.

We also reused excavated material where possible to rebuild previously eroded areas and finished disturbed soil with seed and straw.

The finished product looks great—but more importantly, it has a job to do every time it rains.

This isn’t just landscaping. It’s stormwater management built for the long haul.

Looks can be deceiving.

The gutters weren’t the problem—the underground drainage system was.

✔️ Removed failed 4” corrugated pipe
✔️ Installed new 6” SDR-35 main line
✔️ Connected 3 gutter downspouts
✔️ Tied in the existing drainage line
✔️ Added cleanouts at every downspout
✔️ Discharged into the existing storm drain with an 8” outlet

A properly designed underground drainage system protects your foundation by giving water a path that can actually handle heavy rainfall.

If your gutters overflow during storms, the issue may be underground—not overhead.

Every project starts with a problem.

In this case, it was a hillside that washed mud and silt across the driveway every time it rained, causing ongoing erosion and instability.

Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve completely transformed how this property manages stormwater.

✔ Nearly 190 feet of engineered retaining wall

✔ Approximately 240 feet of engineered dry creek bed

✔ 24-inch catch basin at the end of the creek bed

✔ 18-inch catch basin for driveway runoff

✔ 200 feet of 8-inch SDR-35 main drainage line

✔ New Bermuda sod to restore disturbed areas

The final landscaping and plantings will be completed next, but the drainage system is now in place and ready to do its job.
