Although navigating Louisville's traffic can be difficult, we value the opportunity to provide services to our customers in the area. This project included a 200 amp service upgrade (panel was a brand that is notoriously dangerous) and renovation of the kitchen, bath, and upstairs. Following a review of our work and the condition of the older wiring, the customer has requested a complete re-wiring of the house. Located near the expo center, this property will soon be available for both short and long term rentals.

This week, we handled two calls involving traditional breakers in homes built in the early 2000s, which would have tripped if equipped with arc fault breakers. Customers in both cases noticed a burning smell or visible charring on the outlets and the circuit remain energized.

The widespread adoption of arc fault breakers in new construction is a testament to their importance. If you're concerned about your home's outdated breaker style, we encourage you to get in touch.

Using a portable generator to power your home in the event of an outage requires the use of an interlock kit. This is to prevent harm to personnel working on the utilities during a power outage and protects your home as well. Stay safe!

Just wanted to share the progress on this nearly 4000 square foot house. This place has gorgeous lighting, cat6 Ethernet wired throughout the house, a gaming room, media center with power over Ethernet cameras, a disconnect for a future hot tub, a generator inlet and interlock kit, a 400 amp service, wiring for four outdoor patio heaters, and about (I’m guessing) 100 bible verses written on the framing. We have loved working with this family and on this project. Tells us what you think and feel free to chat us up for ideas on your new builds!

As a veteran owned business we are grateful for the time our country shares in remembering and honoring those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend to celebrate the selfless service of the men and women who so bravely faced danger on our behalf.

While we aren’t working today here is a rundown of the answer to a question I had asked of me recently…

“How do I care for my home’s electrical system and know when I need to address an issue?”

Taking care of your home’s electrical system is not only a matter of ensuring functionality and convenience; it also involves safety precautions to protect your family from hazards such as electrical fires and shocks. As your home ages, the electrical system may require updates or enhancements to continue to serve your needs reliably and safely. It’s critical to be vigilant and proactive with maintenance and to recognize the warning signs that signal a need for electrical updates.

# # # Understanding Your Electrical System:

Your home’s electrical system is composed of an intricate network that includes an electrical service panel, circuits, wiring, outlets, and fixtures. The service panel, which houses circuit breakers or fuses, is the system's central point. It controls the electrical current flowing to various parts of your house. Regular maintenance of this system can help prevent problems before they occur.

# # # Regular Maintenance:

1. **Inspect Service Panels:** Check your service panel periodically to ensure that all circuit breakers are functioning correctly and there's no sign of overheating or rust.

2. **Test Your Outlets:** Use a receptacle tester to check that your outlets are wired correctly and that GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets in bathrooms, kitchens, and other wet areas are functioning properly to prevent shocks.

3. **Look for Damaged Wiring:** Exposed or frayed wiring can be dangerous; if you notice any, call a professional electrician to address the issue.

4. **Check Light Fixtures:** Make sure that bulbs are the correct wattage to prevent overheating.

5. **Review and Label Circuits:** Understanding which circuits control which parts of your home can be critical during an emergency or when repairs are needed.

# # # Knowing When to Update:

1. **Frequent Breaker Trips:** A circuit breaker that trips frequently signals an overloaded circuit, outdated breakers, or a more severe issue.

2. **Flickering Lights:** This can be a symptom of poor connection and can indicate potential fire hazards if not addressed.

3. **Outdated Technology:** If your home is still using a fuse box rather than circuit breakers, or if you lack GFCI outlets where needed, it’s time to consider an update.

4. **Extension Cords as a Norm:** If you’re using extension cords regularly because you don’t have enough outlets, you should look into adding more to handle the electrical load safely.

5. **Home Renovation Plans:** If you're planning on a remodel, particularly for high-load areas like the kitchen, it may be time to upgrade wiring and circuits to handle newer appliances safely.

6. **Age of the Home:** The electrical needs of modern life have evolved dramatically. If your home is over 20 years old, it’s wise to have a professional assess whether it meets current standards.

# # # Enhancing Your Electrical System:

1. **Adding Outlets and Circuits:** This can provide additional capacity and reduce the temptation to use extension cords.

2. **Upgrading to AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) Breakers:** These can prevent fires by detecting dangerous electrical arcs and shutting down the power.

3. **Installing Surge Protectors:** A whole-home surge protector can help protect your appliances and electronics from voltage spikes.

4. **Upgrading Panels:** Old panels may not be equipped to handle modern electrical usage, and upgrading can improve safety and efficiency.

5. **Smart Home Adaptation:** Consider upgrading to smart outlets and switches that allow you to control your home’s electrical components remotely.

# # # Hiring a Professional:

Most electrical work is not a DIY endeavor; it requires the expertise of a licensed electrician. For safety and compliance with local codes, have a professional conduct a thorough assessment and execute any necessary upgrades.

In conclusion, caring for your home’s electrical system is a fundamental aspect of home maintenance that protects your investment and ensures a safe living environment. By understanding how your system works, performing regular inspections, and recognizing when updates are necessary, you can keep your home’s electrical operations running smoothly for years to come. Remember that when in doubt, it’s always best to consult with a professional.
