We've thrown around this term "brownout" before, but what does it actually mean? 🤔

A brownout is a short-term drop in voltage on the electrical grid, intentional or otherwise, that reduces power supply to homes and businesses in a specific area without cutting off power entirely.

The name actually comes from what happens to incandescent bulbs during a voltage reduction: they glow brownish and dim rather than their usual white. That brownish cast is your first sign that voltage has dropped.

We took a look at past rainfall loss and future climate projections across the U.S., and the data reveals a troubling pattern.

The states already drying out are largely the same ones most likely to keep drying, with eight Western states meeting a “double exposure” criterion, meaning they have lost rainfall over the last 30 years and at least 55% of climate models project continued drying ahead.
