Did you know your "3-ton air conditioner" doesn't weigh three tons?

The word ton has nothing to do with the size or weight of your HVAC system.

Before modern air conditioning, buildings were cooled with massive blocks of ice. Engineers measured cooling by how much heat it took to melt one ton (2,000 pounds) of ice in 24 hours.

When mechanical air conditioning was invented, the industry kept using that same measurement.

Today:

• 1 Ton = 12,000 BTUs of cooling per hour
• 2 Ton = 24,000 BTUs
• 3 Ton = 36,000 BTUs

More than 100 years later, HVAC professionals still use "tons" as the standard way to describe cooling capacity.
