What does it take to maintain a park built over a freeway and visited by more than a million people each year?

At Klyde Warren Park, the landscape has to do more than look good. It has to perform.

Built over a 5.4-acre freeway deck with just 36–42 inches of engineered soil, the park requires careful irrigation, aeration and plant selection. Add constant foot traffic and major events drawing thousands of visitors, and maintaining that landscape becomes an ongoing challenge.

Southern Botanical’s team responds with the kind of work visitors may never notice: inspecting turf after major events, rotating closures, reseeding, aerating, fertilizing and continually adapting the landscape to how the park is actually being used.

And that work shows.

🏆 Klyde Warren Park received a 2026 Texas Excellence in Landscaping Gold Award (TEIL).

TEIL recognizes more than beautiful finished projects. It recognizes the expertise, problem-solving and people behind them.

If your team has a project you’re proud of, don’t count yourself out. Your work could be worth recognizing, too.

2027 TEIL entries are now open.
📅 Submission deadline: October 5

That’s a wrap on our summer Paleta Thursdays! 🍧

One of our favorite summer traditions is providing paletas to our frontline team members every Thursday in July and August, giving everyone a little cool relief during the peak of summer.

Same time next year? 👀

A steep slope, no usable lawn, and limited space to gather made this Dallas backyard difficult to use to its full potential.

Our design-build team worked with the grade rather than fighting it. A custom two-level paver deck transformed the slope into two distinct outdoor spaces: an upper level beneath a pergola with a dedicated dining space and a lower patio centered around a fire pit.

Premium synthetic turf gives the kids and family dog a place to play year-round while reducing the maintenance demands.

A Trex and steel staircase also gives the kids direct access to the playground tucked behind the fence.

The result is a backyard designed around real life: dinner under the pergola, afternoons on the lawn, and evenings around the fire.

The National Association of Landscape Professionals has featured our restoration of a private school quarry in Dallas after earning a 2025 Gold Award of Excellence.

The site had gone from a campus landmark to a liability — overgrown, difficult to access, and unsafe to maintain. Much of the shoreline could only be reached by boat, and when cold water and equipment issues slowed that approach, our crews shifted to waders and pull saws to keep the work moving.

On the steepest ledges, teams harnessed in and coordinated by radio headset, using rigging systems to move people, tools, and debris across terrain no vehicle could reach.

You can't fake proper garden management once summer sets in. 🌿

By August, North Texas heat has a way of exposing every missed detail. This garden is still holding its shape, from the rounded boxwoods and pink pentas to the ivy climbing the stone walls.

Good gardens change with the seasons. The best-managed ones never look like they're struggling with them.

One of our core values at Southern Botanical is "never stop growing." For our crews, that's not just a poster on a wall; it's a real program.

A year ago, Jose joined Southern Botanical as an enhancements crew member on the Dallas Commercial team. Today, he is on track to become a certified irrigation technician through Southern Botanical’s cross-training initiative. “I like learning new things, so I instantly said yes to learning about irrigation,” Jose said.

We're proud of how the program is helping crew members like Jose grow while strengthening the teams they support.

Kinda chic to have a garden that looks effortless.

But effortless-looking gardens don't happen by accident. They happen when someone is thinking two seasons ahead, adjusting irrigation as conditions change, understanding what's happening in the soil, catching tree problems early, and remembering what worked last year so the garden can keep getting better.

That's the idea behind thoughtful garden management: taking care of all the details you shouldn't have to think about.
