Dallas/Fort Worth area trees are really putting on a show this year! Have you eve wondered why some years are better than others for fall leaves? A few key weather events combine together to make or break a fall foliage display. First, the trees need a rainy spring. From March to June of 2016, we received almost 14 inches of rain! Check! Next, we need a sunny and warm fall. If it is stormy and windy or very cold, the leaves can die and fall prematurely.

The fall is nearing and believe it or not, it’s the very best time in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to plant things. The temperate fall weather allows for new roots to really take hold before the winter comes, which is typically less harsh and lasts for less time than our grueling summers. Before you dig, it’s best to carefully consider the design and purpose of your landscape…much more is involved than just planting trees and plants.

Thoughtful land planning, plant selection and proper maintenance are all things that embody landscape horticulture. Before you get started with a new garden area or plant bed, you must consider the existing land. Where are the trees? How much sunlight does the area get? Is the area exposed to the North or South winds? Do you need to build any fences, walls or a patio? These are all great questions to ask yourself before planning your landscape.

Another very important element in the development of your new landscape is use of the space. Is it an area of relaxation or recreation? How much space do you have and what is the correct size of the plants you should use for that space? (Hint: always plant to maturation of the plant to avoid over-crowding.)

Finally, consider maintenance of the area. How involved do you want to be with maintaining the area? If you don’t have time of desire for heavy maintenance and watering, choose Texas Native plants that can withstand our climate with little intervention from you. To limit maintenance, you should plan for things like small lawn areas, groundcovers, an irrigation system, small flower beds and ornamental trees.

Just yesterday we noticed that acorns are beginning to form on Red Oak trees…it’s that time of year! Planting your very own tree can be fun for adults and children alike and it’s much more fulfilling and economical than buying a sapling. Plus, you can rest assured that the tree you plant will most likely do well in your soil since the parent tree is healthy.

Planting a tree can be successful if you follow the correct steps. First, grab a handful of whole, healthy-looking acorns and put them into a bowl of water overnight. Discard the acorns that are floating, as they are not viable. Next, shovel some native soil into a plant container with holes in the bottom for drainage. Plant the acorn about an inch deep, making sure to place it on its side. Make sure you place the container in an area that gets about ½ a day of sunshine and water well. Keep the container watered well, but careful not to over water. Once you are ready to plant the new tree in the ground, make sure that you choose a place with enough room to grow to maturity. Help your trees survive (even thrive) the heat of the summer…the secret is in the soil! While you can’t change the entirety of the soil your trees are planted in, you can amend the soil to provide invaluable minerals, vitamins and air. Since we don’t recommend watering established trees, you might notice cracks in the soil. You can add compost to these cracks to feed your tree, or you can aerate your soil and amend it that way as well. We also recommend a thin layer of organic material underneath the canopy (the area under your tree that would be protected from the sun and rain, similar to an umbrella) to the dripline (the area where the protection from the canopy runs out).
