There's a particular kind of pride in handing back a building that's stood on Commercial Street since 1854, better than you found it.

The Granite Block is finished. After a careful, five-story restoration, this Old Port landmark is now home to the Evalina Hotel, a 15-suite boutique hotel where historic windows, exposed masonry and original granite lintels sit right alongside everything a modern hotel needs.

This one tested us in the best way. Buildings this old don't give up their secrets until you're inside the walls, and every secret was a chance to Build Better. Our team and our subs solved those problems shoulder to shoulder, and the finished space speaks for itself.

That's the kind of project we live for. Thank you to owner Scott Lindsay and the team at Fathom Cos. for trusting us with a piece of Portland's history, and to every sub who put their hands on it. When a building like this comes back to life, everyone's life benefits from the work we did together.

There's a false tradeoff in construction between safety and production. Go fast or be safe — pick one. We reject that framing.

The truth is that a safe job site is usually a better-organized job site. When materials are stored properly, people can find them. When scaffolding is set up right, the work done from it is better. When tools are maintained correctly, they perform better and last longer.

Before any work starts on a project, we build a site-specific safety plan . That's not a generic form — it's a document that reflects the actual conditions on the actual site, the trades that will be working, and the specific hazards they'll encounter.

Office renovations don't get much attention. No steel going up, no drone footage of a foundation pour. Just a building that, at some point, stops working the way the people inside need it to work. That's where VHB started.

The two-phase fit-out included 26 private offices, 46 workstations, two conference rooms, and an employee cafe. Glass partitions run throughout — office fronts, conference enclosures, demountable walls — keeping the space open and the light moving.

Built for how VHB's team works.

Today was a good reminder of why we work in construction. We spent the day with Bring Back the Trades Inc at the South Portland Skills Expo, talking with high schoolers who are curious about a career in the trades. We listened to their questions, shared what a day on a job site really looks like, and met the next generation of tradesmen and tradeswomen who'll be building New England long after us. Construction is a relationship business — and that starts well before anyone ever signs a contract. Grateful to the organizers, the teachers, and every student who came by to talk with us.

We broke ground in October on this workforce housing project for General Dynamics Bath Iron Works and Developers Collaborative. Six months and one tough Maine winter later, you can see the whole story in a single shot: foundations going in, framing and sheathing rising, and the first building wrapped and roofed. Progress like this doesn’t happen without good people and good companies. Foundation crews, framers, plumbers — every team kept showing up through cold, snow, and short days to keep this project moving.

There are never the right words, gestures, or ways to show support in a moment like this.

This week, one of Optimum’s own, experienced an unimaginable loss.

Mike and his family are going through something no one should ever have to face. There’s nothing that can make this situation better, but we hope to provide some level of support as they navigate the days ahead. As a team and as a community, we hope to come together to support him during this incredibly difficult time.

If you’re able, please consider donating and keeping Mike and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Concrete day at Stevens Square! Our crews poured the slab on deck, a major milestone on this 60,000 SF, five-story expansion in partnership with Developers Collaborative. We're excited to keep this moving for the Stevens Square community.

Steel is rising at Ballard Truck Centers and it's not slowing down. From ground prep to structural steel in the dead of a New England winter - this is what happens when the right team shows up every day with a plan. Proud of the team for keeping this one on track.
