Grunow Builders Inc. GBI was founded by the late Steven Grunow in 1971.

is a hands-on, family-owned, local company that specializes in long-term customer relationships. Steven's son, Ben, joined the family business in 1996 following the completion of his civil engineering degree, and is now the sole owner and operator. Ben lives in Darien with his wife, Dana, and their two children. Ben and Dana grew up in Old Greenwich and and Darien, respectively, and have a strong commitment to family and community.

Good morning from waterfront Shippan and the site of the next Grunow Builders project! This home is situated right on Long Island Sound on a double lot. The owners have grown children and will be creating a home for their next chapter of life, retirement and family gatherings. Ben was referred to this job by a couple whose home he completed last year and wonderful family friends. Stay tuned for progress updates!

Ben has spent the better part of a year building this custom home in Old Greenwich. He had worked with the homeowner on a prior renovation at his other residence and was hired to build this home starting in 2018. In addition to the main house, Ben also built the dock, pool house and pool. The landscaping was just completed by GroPro and the homeowners are now officially living in their dream home with their children and dogs.

Grunow Builders has been insanely busy these last few months working with some
fantastic neighbors and friends. We will send some before and after a in just a few weeks when the jobs finish up.
In the meantime Ben has started on a job on the water in Old Greenwich with a client who he did a renovation for a few years ago. When this amazing spot came up for sale at the end of his road in Old Greenwich the owner contacted Ben to do the job for him. Right now it’s a blank slate- the previous house was torn down to make room! The drawings call for a 6000 plus square foot home, pool, pool pavilion, and a million dollar view of NYC. I’ll update with more photos and videos along the way. Come along for the ride!
Oh and And Linda Grunow get ready to have Ben for lunch every day!!!

All I want for Christmas is...walls, roof, hvac, electrical and plumbing!
GBI has been furiously working away at this residence. The framing is up and before you know it the entire space will be enclosed. You can really begin to see the scale of he project and the layout. Pray for no snow or rain so the GBI team can get it closed up soon!

Ben sent me these pictures this week and they are great for so many reasons. A fantastic family is expanding their home to fit their growing family, I️t will be a nice short commute from our home- just around the corner- and I️t is now the sixth (6!!!!!) house in our neighborhood that Ben has worked on! It’s a testament to Ben’s honesty, work ethic, experience and the ability to communicate clearly that he continues to be recommended to work for our best friends and neighbors. We thank you all for your trust in Grunow Builder’s and will continue to work hard to build the best homes for you all!

We are back in Old Greenwich today and I drove by this house that we did a gut renovation on about 10 years ago. It is so great to see that they keep it up and that it looks as great as it did the day we packed up our trucks and left. The same family lives there today and we still keep in touch!

He loves to solve design and build problems through practical and beautiful design. You want to take out that wall? Look like they’ve always been there. He loves nothing more than working with a family to create home designs that can be constantly altered and updated throughout a project. Something an architect usually won’t do. With his CAD-like software and his team he can create designs for an entire new home, renovation or small adjustments.
Below is a home in Darien where the homeowner wanted to update the exterior of their home. Ben designed the changes and his team just finished it a few weeks ago. Check out the before and afters!

As you can tell I am trying to get Ben to share more about the DNA of his business. His father Steven Grunow began his business in the 70’s in Old Greenwich and Ben joined him
Shortly before we got married around 2000. Grunow Builders did most of their work in Old Greenwich where they lived and raised their kids. Occasionally you would find their trucks in backcountry Greenwich but the bread and butter was Riverside and OG. Sadly Ben’s dad passed away in 2008 and Ben not only had to grieve the loss of his best friend- he had lost his business partner and mentor all while riding the financial roller coaster ride of 2008. It was rough to say the least. Fast forward a few years and Hurricane Sandy hit the area. A huge tree fell on this house in Ben’s old neighborhood. The family immediately called GBI and Ben and his crew went to work repairing and renovating this home. While their neighbor and friend Steve was no longer at the helm they knew Ben could do the job. Ben went back there this week to talk about new kitchens, bathroom renovations and more. It’s like working with Family when these kind of people call.

Grunow Builders worked on this family’s home in Darien a few years ago and is back again for round two! Their kids have gotten older so they are adding another bedroom and new master bath as well as doing a complete kitchen renovation. Testament to his honesty, integrity and work ethic that clients keep coming back.
