Excellent information and advice from our friends at Blue Grass Enterprises, Inc.!
It's that time of year again! ☀️
As you are driving around town, you will probably notice younger lawns (0-7ish years in age) showing this kind of stress - especially if they are non-irrigated.
In our industry, we refer to this damage as "sun scorch". It is essentially a glorified sun burn and a direct result of the weather shifting from a very cool, wet spring to a dry, hot summer very quickly.
Unfortunately, juvenile lawns don't have deep enough root systems yet to be able to pull moisture from deeper profiles, so this means they are much more prone to this glorified sunburn.
How can you help? Stop mowing when you see signs of this damage. Dehydrating the plant more will only make it worse. 13-13-13 and water will help the area recover over time. Regular core aerations in your lawn program will help to promote the growth of deeper root systems that will help these lawns grow out of this behavior over time. 🥰💚🌾
