The gardens at our office are doing a nice job of handling the heat this week. While beauty is always a priority, choosing the right plants for the location is just as important!

Do you have water mitigation issues?
A rain garden is a planted depression in the landscape that collects and allows rainwater runoff from hard surfaces to be absorbed. Rain gardens are planted with native plants, and include a soil media and mulch. Rain gardens typically are used to reduce residential rooftop runoff or impervious surfaces on residential property.

Rain gardens offer multiple benefits to the community and the local environment, including:

Reduced flooding and erosion,
Pollution prevention,
Groundwater recharge,
Enhanced wildlife habitat,
Improved aesthetics and...
Increased property values.

Homestead Gardens Landscape Division and its crews have many years of experience building retaining walls of all kinds. Material options for your retaining wall include geo block, mortared stacked stone, boulders, CMU with stone veneer, and timbers.

A timber wall is a cost effective way to retain slopes. For this project, we retained a hillside that will allow us to plant trees, providing a privacy screen looking into the backyard from the main road at the bottom of the slope. The retaining wall gives us a level area for planting, but it also adds additional height for when the privacy screen is initially planted. Reducing vehicular noise from the busy road will be another benefit of adding a privacy screen.

Do you have an existing area that simply needs an update? A new and fresh look upgraded this space to make it more functional, while keeping and working with the existing brick. The patio has now been newly laid on a proper base to preserve this outdoor living area for many years to come!

"Well, you did it again. I was worried the steps would be too massive, but I decided to trust your judgment and they are perfect. I'm attaching some photos but they look much nicer in person than in the photos. The men worked very hard and don't mess around!

Thanks again for all you've done to make our place more beautiful and serene!"

While we're all longing for warmer and greener days, you might be happy to know that there's an old saying... "A good winter with snow makes all the plants grow."

Snow is *actually* a fantastic insulator and it protects the soil against wide temperature fluctuations. Snow is also a great fertilizer - Nitrogen attaches to snowflakes as the snow falls through the atmosphere!

Snow and ice CAN be damaging to branches, but remember all the benefits! We need the moisture and protection that only the snow can bring, and knowing that helps us all be a little more grateful on these winter days.
