🎙️ A Great Memory — The Cutters Edge Total Landscape Solutions Radio Show
Every once in a while, I come across something from the past that reminds me just how incredible the journey with Cutters Edge really was.
One of those chapters was the Cutters Edge Total Landscape Solutions Radio Show, hosted by Reno Grant and me, William Quigley, on iHeartRadio.
What started as another way to educate our customers became something much bigger.
Our philosophy at Cutters Edge was always simple: an educated customer is the best customer.
The radio show gave us the opportunity to take the knowledge our team had accumulated in the field and share it with the public. We talked about everything from the roots of your grass to the tips of your trees — landscape maintenance, irrigation, arbor care, plant healthcare, hurricane preparedness and many other subjects affecting our customers and communities.
And then there was the theme song. 🎶
That's another fun part of the story.
When we were developing the show, iHeartMedia suggested using the theme from Green Acres. It certainly would have been fun and recognizable for a landscaping show, but I felt what we were creating needed to be more serious. Our purpose wasn't simply entertainment. We wanted to educate the public and hopefully make a difference.
I suggested “Pass It On Down” by Alabama, and it became a staple of the Cutters Edge Radio Show, opening and closing our program.
The message behind that song fit perfectly with what I believed Cutters Edge represented. It asks us to think about what we're leaving behind for the next generation — our land, our water, our environment and the responsibility we have to take care of what has been entrusted to us.
One of the song's central ideas is simple but powerful: what we have today isn't ours alone; we have a responsibility to preserve it and pass something worthwhile on to those who follow us.
For a company whose people spent every day working with trees, plants, soil, water and the environment, I couldn't think of a better message.
And after hearing it week after week, that opening became part of the identity of the show. When “Pass It On Down” started playing, you knew the Cutters Edge Total Landscape Solutions Radio Show was coming on.
Looking back, it's pretty amazing that we ultimately produced 122 episodes between 2019 and 2022.
But what I remember most isn't the number of episodes.
It's the people, the conversations and the opportunity to share what we had learned.
I had the privilege of sitting behind those microphones with Reno Grant, members of our Cutters Edge team, landscape professionals, property managers, business leaders and many other great guests. We laughed, learned, shared experiences and hopefully helped a lot of people along the way.
For a guy who started Cutters Edge with $51,000, a vision and a determination to succeed, sitting in an iHeartMedia studio hosting our own radio show was something I never could have imagined when we started the company.
Cutters Edge was never built simply by selling landscape services.
We built a brand.
We built a culture.
We built a team.
And most importantly, we built relationships.
The radio show became another part of that story.
Today, Cutters Edge continues its next chapter as part of the LMC Landscape Partners family, while I've moved into another chapter of my career helping landscape business owners consider what the next chapter of their own journey might look like.
But I'll always be incredibly proud of what our Cutters Edge family built together.
🎙️ 122 episodes. One unforgettable theme song. A lot of great conversations. A lot of great memories. And one heck of a journey.
And maybe the message of that theme song means even more to me today than it did when we first chose it:
Build something worthwhile, take care of it, and leave something meaningful for the next generation.
