I know it’s not brick, block, stone or tile. We never know what we may get into on a daily basis. This was a different little project that we had fun with, and learned a lot about solar power along the way. Great customers to work with as well!

🥵🥵🥵🥵Latest project completed in the heat this week! This little old chimney needed a lot of love. The old mortar parge job on it was cracking and crumbling and falling off. The crown on top no longer existed and the flue liner was in bad shape.

-The Fix:
So for this project I decided that the old parge job needed to be completely removed and cleaned up down to the original blockwork. It was a lot of work but definitely necessary. There was way too much cracking and crumbling and the bond was compromised between the parge and the block to just mortar over it. The flashing at the roofline was re caulked and sealed to prevent any leaks. I decided to install galvanized metal lathe using Tapcon fasteners to the block. I then applied a scratchcoat of CSC-4 Mortar with added acrylic fortifier to insure a very strong bond to the block work. I cleaned up the top of the chimney and removed the top damaged clay flue liner and replaced it with a brand new one. I applied a bond break on top of the chimney and built and installed a form for the concrete crown with a nice big overhang. I reinforced the concrete with rebar. The flue liner was wrapped with sill seal to allow for expansion and contraction which is the number one cause of cracking on these concrete crowns. I then poured a high strength concrete mix into the form. The next day the form was removed and cleaned up and I caulked around the flue liner. I ground out a channel on the underside of the over hang of the crown called a “Kerf” to insure that the water would drip off the crown instead of rolling back behind the face of the chimney and compromising the new parge job.
After that was complete I was ready for the finish parge to match the foundation. Again I used CSC-4 with added acrylic fortifier and parged over my scratchcoat. And there we have it. After the mortar cures my customer is going to paint over the chimney and foundation with a special specific masonry paint that will allow the masonry to breathe and moisture to exit, and it will all match and look brand new!
At McKerracher Masonry we strive for perfection no matter how big the job is. Using the correct up to date methods and material is crucial to lasting quality and longevity. We take immense pride in our finished product. Expert craftsmanship, communication, job-site etiquette, cleanliness and building solid relationships with our customers are all top priorities to us.
