Why Safety Wednesday: With Midwest temperatures peaking, heat is one of the most serious hazards facing roofing crews. Understanding the “why” behind heat-safety precautions, not merely knowing the rules, can help workers recognize the risk and take action sooner.

Roof surfaces can become significantly hotter than the surrounding air, sometimes by 40°F or more. Heat stress and dehydration can develop before a worker feels thirsty, impairing concentration, judgment, and situational awareness before the warning signs become obvious.

When crews understand why precautions matter, they are more likely to put them into practice on the job site.
