After more than 42 years in insurance and risk management, Sue Atkinson recently retired, leaving behind a legacy defined by excellence, dedication, and quiet leadership. When Sue joined Hooper, the company employed approximately 300 people across three states. Today, Hooper has grown to more than 1,600 employees in 26 states—and through that remarkable expansion, Sue remained a steady, trusted presence.

During her 23 years with Hooper, Sue worked largely behind the scenes, managing a complex portfolio of claims, including vehicle accidents, general liability, property damage, theft, and workers’ compensation. Her calm expertise and unwavering commitment ensured that even the most challenging situations were handled with care and precision.

In recognition of her impact and quiet leadership, Sue was honored in 2025 with the Daily Reporter’s Women in Construction Unsung Hero Award, a testament to the lasting difference she made throughout her career.

Thank you Sue for your many years of service and incredible commitment to Hooper! We wish you the best in your well-earned retirement!

On the fourth floor of a job site in Eau Claire, WI, Nathan identified a loading area leading outside that was left unsecured. The safety gate and exterior doors were wide open, and no one was monitoring the area. This created a fall hazard for anyone working nearby.

He stopped work immediately and contacted the general contractor’s superintendent so the unsafe condition could be corrected. Addressing the issue right away helped prevent a potential fall or injury and reinforced the importance of looking out for everyone on the job site, not just Hooper employees.

MilliporeSigma’s Project Opal facility in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, is a growing hub for diagnostic and life science manufacturing. The campus includes more than 14 buildings and 600 employees, with Project Opal producing materials used in over one billion rapid diagnostic tests annually, including pregnancy, influenza, malaria, HIV, COVID-19, and food safety tests.

Hooper’s Mechanical Division played a key role in delivering this complex project, providing HVAC, plumbing, process piping, and custom metal fabrication expertise.
The Plumbing team installed a critical underground fire containment system to protect people and the environment. The system includes large-diameter PVC piping, 24 trench drains, and a 26,000-gallon exterior containment tank that captures runoff in the event of a fire. Much of the piping was prefabricated at Hooper’s Fabrication Facility, improving efficiency and enabling installation in subfreezing conditions to maintain schedule.

Crews also installed more than 3,000 feet of electrically fused polypropylene dual-containment piping for the underground process waste system, ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials. Hooper’s Custom Metals group fabricated ten double-bowl, ventilated stainless-steel sinks for laboratory spaces to safely manage hazardous solvents.

On the HVAC side, the team completed one of the largest stainless steel ductwork efforts in recent company history, supporting research exhaust systems with more than 8,000 fabrication shop hours. All ductwork was butt welded and back purged to ensure clean, high-integrity welds critical for this high-tech environment.

Energy efficiency was central to the design. An energy recovery system captures and reuses heat, while a geo-source heat pump provides about half of the building’s heating and cooling needs. These systems work alongside the boiler plant, chilled water plant, and a snowmelt system using over 20,000 gallons of glycol.

This project highlights Hooper’s skilled workforce and collaborative approach in delivering high-performance infrastructure.

Science shows that energy causes harm, and more energy causes more harm. High energy events are what lead to serious injuries and fatalities. When there is potential exposure to hazardous energy, we use controls.

Controls are physical measures that reduce, isolate, or remove that energy. Direct controls act on the hazard itself and alternative controls reduce the chance of human error when direct controls aren’t possible. Driving is a high-energy activity that most of us experience every day.

Here are some examples of the controls we use to manage that risk:
🟡Hazard: Impact injury ⟶ Direct Control: Seat belt and airbags ⟶ Alternative Control: “Buckle up” reminders
🟡Hazard: Vehicle collision ⟶ Direct Control: Automatic emergency braking ⟶ Alternative Control: Traffic signals
🟡Hazard: High speed collision ⟶ Direct Control: Speed limiter ⟶ Alternative Control: Posted speed limits
🟡Hazard: Driving into opposing traffic ⟶ Direct Control: Median barrier ⟶ Alternative control: Painted lane markings

Good controls are designed for a specific hazard and can be easily seen and checked. The best direct controls continue to work even when people make mistakes, because even skilled workers can have a momentary distraction or miss a step. Strong controls help keep those moments from turning into a serious injury or fatality.

Not every high-energy hazard has a direct control. For example, there is not yet a fully effective direct control for fatigue-related crashes. Some alternative controls exist, such as driver monitoring systems and hours-of-service limits for commercial drivers, but these still rely heavily on human behavior and decision-making.
