Cinco de Mayo has always held a deeper meaning for my family. ❤️

When I was little, my Grandma Buffa was one of the hardest workers I knew. She may have been a stay-at-home wife and mom, but she ran the household with strength, pride, and determination. She did what needed to be done — and she did it well.

One memory that has always stuck with me is watching her mix her own concrete and pour the sidewalks around their cottage in Lakewood. At the time, I don’t think I fully understood how much that moment would stay with me. I just knew my grandma was tough, capable, and not afraid of hard work.

Looking back now, it’s funny how often I used to tell people that story — and somehow, years later, I ended up joining my husband in a concrete flatwork business of our own.

Bath Concrete Flatwork is about more than concrete to us. It’s about helping customers bring their outdoor visions to life, taking pride in honest work, supporting our community, and giving back to our youth and local sports. Those values mean so much to us — and many of them are values I learned from her.

My grandmother believed in hard work, family, community, and showing up for others. I am proud to take after her and continue trying to fill her shoes in some small way.

Cinco de Mayo was her favorite day of the year, and it also became the day she left this earthly world to join my grandpa. Because of that, May 5th will always be a day of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration of her life.

Today, we honor Grandma Buffa — her strength, her work ethic, her love for family, and the legacy she left behind. ❤️

🧱 Protect Your Concrete Investment — Maintenance Matters 🧱

Concrete is built to last—but in Wisconsin’s harsh climate, proper care and maintenance make all the difference in how long it truly performs and looks its best.

Here’s what every homeowner should know 👇

🔒 How Often Should You Seal Your Concrete?

At Bath Concrete Flatwork, we apply sealer to most projects upon completion—but ongoing maintenance is key:

• Driveways, steps & high-traffic areas: Seal every year (best in fall)
• Patios & sidewalks: Seal every other year

👉 Concrete is porous. Without sealer, moisture gets in—and when it freezes, it can lead to cracking, scaling, and surface damage. Sealer also protects against stains, dusting, and wear.

❄️ Winter Care (Most Important in Wisconsin)

Freeze-thaw cycles are the #1 cause of damage.
❌ Avoid traditional de-icing salts (they pull moisture into concrete)
✅ Use sand or kitty litter for traction
🧹 Remove snow early to prevent refreezing and environmental damage
🚫 Use plastic shovels (metal can damage the surface)
💧 Keep downspouts and drainage OFF your concrete

🛠️ Ongoing Maintenance Tips
• Seal regularly to reduce water and chemical absorption
• Repair small cracks before winter
• Clean oil, fertilizer, and organic debris to prevent staining and breakdown

⚠️ Prevent Structural Damage
• Avoid heavy trucks, trailers, or RVs unless designed for it
• Ensure proper grading—water should flow AWAY from concrete
• Protect new concrete:
* No driving for **7 days**
* Avoid heavy loads for **1 year**
* No deicers during the **first winter**

🧊 Can You Use Deicers?
First year:
❌ No deicing chemicals
✅ Sand only
🚫 Never use rock salt

After year 2:
• Use sodium or calcium chloride **sparingly**
❌ Never use ammonium-based products (they destroy concrete fast)

📍 Why This Matters in Wisconsin

We’re considered a **severe weather region**—constant freeze-thaw cycles + moisture + deicers = accelerated wear.

👉 The best way to protect your concrete: Seal it. Maintain it. Use the right products.

Your concrete is an investment—take care of it, and it’ll take care of you for years to come.

Stamped vs. Broomed — Which is right for you? 🤔

When it comes to concrete, the finish you choose makes a big impact — not just in how it looks, but how it performs over time.

✨ Stamped Concrete
If you’re looking for a high-end, custom look — stamped is tough to beat.

We can create finishes that mimic:
• Natural slate
• Barn board wood textures
• Brick or cobblestone
• And more

Each stamped project has its own unique variation in color and texture, which means no two patios or walkways ever look exactly the same.

⚠️ Keep in mind: stamped concrete can be more slippery when wet. We can apply a slip-resistant additive to the sealer to improve traction and keep things safer.

🧹 Broomed Finish Concrete
This is the classic, clean, and highly functional option.
A broomed finish provides:
• Consistent texture for better traction
• Safer surfaces for driveways, sidewalks, and high-traffic areas
• Easier snow removal (plow blades and shovels won’t catch patterns)

It may be simpler in appearance, but it’s extremely durable and practical — especially in Wisconsin winters.

So… which should you choose?
• Want something decorative and eye-catching? → Go stamped
• Need durability, traction, and easy maintenance? → Go broomed
• Want both? → Consider a broomed finish with a decorative, colored stamped border — it gives you the best of both worlds with added style and function

At the end of the day, it comes down to how you use the space and what matters most to you.

Have questions or want to see options for your project? Send us a message: [email protected] — we’re happy to help.

🚧 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Driveway 🚧

Your driveway takes a beating every single day—from weather, vehicles, and time itself. But how do you know when it’s time to stop patching and start fresh?

Here are the signs it might be time for a replacement:

1️⃣ Cracks Everywhere
Small cracks happen—but when they start spreading and connecting, it’s a sign the base is failing.

2️⃣ Sinking or Uneven Sections
If parts of your driveway are settling or lifting, water is likely getting underneath and causing damage.

3️⃣ It’s Just Plain Worn Out
If your driveway is 20+ years old and looks tired, a new install can completely transform your home’s curb appeal.

👉 A new driveway isn’t just about looks—it’s about long-term durability, safety, and value.

If you’re seeing these signs, it might be time to explore your options.
