🔥 Emergency Heat in Extreme Cold ❄️
🚨 A Tech’s Perspective for Heat Pumps 🚨

There’s a lot of mixed advice out there about Emergency Heat, so here’s the honest explanation from the field:

When outdoor temperatures drop into single digits, many standard North Texas heat pumps lose efficiency. At that point:

• The outdoor unit may run constantly
• It produces very little usable heat
• The system often runs the heat strips at the same time
• You’re paying to run both systems together

🔥 In these extreme conditions, switching to Emergency Heat CAN actually be more energy-efficient.

✅ Why?

Emergency Heat:
• Shuts the heat pump off completely
• Runs the heat kit only
• Prevents the outdoor unit from running nonstop with minimal output
• Can reduce unnecessary wear and wasted energy

⚠️ Important distinction

This does NOT apply to:
• Normal cold weather
• Temps in the 20s or 30s
• Short overnight dips

This applies during prolonged extreme cold, especially when:
✔️ The system runs nonstop
✔️ Indoor temperature barely rises
✔️ Heat strips are already active constantly

💡 Bottom line:
Emergency Heat is not for everyday cold, but during sustained single-digit temps, it can be the smarter, more efficient option depending on your system.

When it gets this cold, your system is going to work harder. Some things you’ll notice are totally normal… others are signs something isn’t right.

Normal on cold days:✅
• Your system runs longer than usual
• It cycles more often to keep up
• Air feels warm, not hot
• You hear it working a little more
• The outdoor unit keeps running in freezing temps

Not normal:🚫
• Air coming out cold
• Constant on/off cycling
• Loud banging, grinding, or squealing
• Strong burning smells
• Rooms not heating evenly or no heat at all

Cold weather doesn’t usually break systems…it shows you where they’re already weak.
