June 19, marks the celebration of Juneteenth, a crucial moment in American history when the last American slaves in Galveston, Texas heard the news that they had been freed. We feel that this day should be celebrated with as much importance as the Fourth of July, America’s Independence Day, because if we are not all free then none of us can be truly free.
Although a great deal of reform and growth is still needed to close the gap of racial inequality, commemoration of Juneteenth should remind us every year where we started this journey. We must continue on this path towards dismantling racism and eliminating bias and inequity from our institutions, the health care and legal systems, and our society. This day should inspire us to keep fight the battle against racism.
Today, here at Modern Packaging, (PDF Seals, Pintail Coffee) we are United in Solidarity and have declared a half day holiday, with plans in the future to make it a full day and we hope the federal government will follow us in this push to make Juneteenth a national day of remembrance.
