The Delaware County Master Gardener Therapeutic Horticulture team had a wonderful afternoon with our assisted living friends at WillowBrook Christian Village. We were thrilled to provide a hands on activity led by Delaware County Master Gardener Marlene Suter. Her knowledge and enthusiasm about being ‘Batty about Bulbs’ was palpable. She demonstrated the lasagna method of planting tulips, daffodils and grape hyacinths in pots. Our friends worked together in groups. Each group partnered with one of our volunteers and together the promise of spring was created. We watered the pots, covered them with leaves and placed them in a sheltered location until spring! We made a mess! After the clean up, our friends enjoyed some home baked goods provided by the bakers on our team. We love Spreading joy and appreciate this wonderful partnership with Connie, and our WillowBrook Christian Village friends.

A big Thank you to Groovy Plants Ranch and Jared for such an interesting and informative tour Tuesday evening. Our DCMGA volunteers were given a glimpse of the process integral to plant preparation for spring which involved a conveyer where plugs( Dianthus and Violas) are placed in 4" pots and watered. One of our Master Gardeners and a Groovy Plants employee Will Reiser explained the replanting process. Our volunteers were given the opportunity to try theirs hands at working on the line(dibble, plant and press). A highlight of the evening was a demonstration of the new Rovero Roll-Air Greenhouse, one of only 2 in the U.S. We concluded the evening in The Frond classroom which was perfect for our well attended meeting of 60. It was a fun and educational meeting for all of our members.Groovy Plants Ranch

Look what we found in one of our Grace Clinic Garden beds! A Black Swallowtail Caterpillar (Papilio polyxenes)!

These caterpillars like to eat herbs and sure enough, this one was feasting on fresh dill. We left it to complete its life-cycle to find a vertical surface where it will transform into a chrysalis.
