What looks like a simple hole in the tile actually requires a lot of precision.

When installing large-format slabs around plumbing, every opening needs to be carefully measured and positioned so the pipes and fixtures land exactly where they’re supposed to once the slab goes on the wall.

There’s very little room for error. A cut in the wrong location can compromise an entire piece of material; which is why measuring, planning and making clean penetrations are such an important part of the installation.

These are the details you probably won’t think about when you see the finished bathroom.

But they’re exactly the details we’re thinking about while building it.

Does vein matching really matter? 👀 ←

We paired 48” × 48” porcelain floors with 11’ × 6’ wall slabs in a warm white finish with soft brown and taupe veining. Brushed-gold fixtures complement those warmer tones, bringing the entire design together.

The oversized format means fewer grout lines, creating a cleaner, more continuous look that makes the bathroom feel larger, brighter, and more minimal.

And with slabs this size, layout matters. Each piece was carefully positioned to keep the tones and veining flowing naturally throughout the space.

Those mortar ridges aren’t random.

Directional troweling helps create a path for air to escape as the tile is embedded into the mortar, helping the ridges collapse and improving contact underneath the tile.

Simply swirling mortar around may look satisfying, but proper technique matters; especially when working with larger-format material.

Once the tile goes down, you’ll never see these ridges again.

But how they were created can affect the installation long after they’re gone.
