For this months June Spotlight, we’re focusing on a pollinator that not always comes to mind…

🦇🦇BATS!!!

Creating a bat-friendly Florida garden is all about providing food, water, shelter, and a pesticide-free environment. While Florida’s bats are primarily insect-eaters, a well-designed native landscape can attract the insects they feed on and provide habitat for both bats and other wildlife.

🦇 Start with Native Plants

Plant a variety of Florida natives that support moths, beetles, and other nighttime insects.

Good choices include:

* Firebush (Hamelia patens)
* American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana)
* Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)
* Walter’s Viburnum (Viburnum obovatum)
* Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris)
* Native oaks and other canopy trees

These plants support caterpillars, moths, beetles, and other insects that become food for bats.

💧 Provide Water

Bats need water and often drink while flying.

Consider:

* A small pond
* A wildlife-friendly water garden
* A birdbath with a gentle bubbler

Moving water is especially attractive because bats can locate it more easily.

🌳 Preserve Roosting Habitat

Many Florida bats use:

* Mature trees
* Dead snags (when safe)
* Palm fronds
* Tree cavities

Leaving some natural structure in your landscape can make a big difference.

🏠 Install a Bat House

For best results:

* Mount 12–20 feet high
* Place in full sun
* Face south or southeast
* Keep away from bright nighttime lights
* Install near a water source if possible

Florida’s warm climate is ideal for bat houses when properly sited.

🚫 Avoid Pesticides

Pesticides reduce the insect populations bats depend on and can expose wildlife to harmful chemicals.

Instead:

* Use integrated pest management practices
* Accept a little insect activity as part of a healthy ecosystem
* Encourage natural predators

🌙 Reduce Light Pollution

Many bat species prefer darker areas.

Try:

* Shielded outdoor lights
* Motion-sensor lighting
* Warm-colored bulbs
* Turning off unnecessary lights at night

DID YOU KNOW?

🦇✨ ✨🦇

When most people think of pollinators, they picture buzzing bees and fluttering butterflies. But did you know that bats are pollinators too?

As the sun sets and the night shift begins, bats head out in search of nectar. As they dip their fuzzy faces into flowers, pollen sticks to their fur. When they visit the next flower for a sweet snack, they unknowingly deliver that pollen, helping plants reproduce. 🌼➡️🦇➡️🌼

Think of them as nature’s tiny nighttime gardeners!

Not only do bats help pollinate plants, but many species also eat thousands of insects each night, making them valuable allies in healthy ecosystems. 🌙✨

So the next time you see a bat fluttering through the evening sky, give a little wave and say, “Thanks for helping our plants grow!” 👋🦇

At Deep Roots Landscape Services, we love creating landscapes that support pollinators of all kinds—from bees and butterflies to the often-overlooked creatures of the night.

💚 Every pollinator matters.
🌿 Every native plant helps.
🦇 Even bats deserve a little appreciation!

What’s your favorite nighttime wildlife visitor?

🌺 Pollinator Plant Spotlight: Florida Firebush (Hamelia patens)

📍 Native Florida Favorite

If you’re looking for a plant that delivers months of color while supporting local wildlife, Florida Firebush is hard to beat.

🔥 Why We Love It

* Vibrant orange-red tubular flowers bloom from spring through fall
* Thrives in Florida’s heat, humidity, and summer rains
* Fast-growing and easy to maintain
* Drought-tolerant once established

🦋 Pollinator Powerhouse
Firebush is a magnet for:

* Butterflies
* Native bees
* Hummingbirds

Its nectar-rich blooms provide a valuable food source throughout much of the growing season.

🌿 Growing Conditions
☀️ Full sun to partial shade
💧 Moderate water during establishment
📏 Typically grows 5–10 feet tall and wide
🌱 Works beautifully in pollinator gardens, native landscapes, and wildlife habitats

💡 Landscape Tip

🌻🌸Fully Native Pollinator Garden🌸🌻

This client had an Oak removed and wanted to plant a garden that was both beautiful as well as functional for our pollinators.

With large root matting, we went in and built the space up with rich soil and bordered with natural coquina and Florida fieldstone. The stump was carved out slightly so that a birdbath and set of pots could be incorporated as a focal point.

This garden has a variety of host and nectar plants to support birds, bees, butterflies, and moths.

I have to give absolutely all of the praise to this girl right here.

It’s rare finding decent help. It’s hard to find someone reliable who will come in day after day and work their butt off. In the heat. Through the dirt. Through the actual pain ripping up roots and shoveling heavy rock. And that goes for any age. It takes true heart to come in every day fresh with a willingness to learn.

I started this business a few months ago and from day one, Savanna has been all hands on deck. It’s been truly impressive to see the amount of work she has put in and never once has said “I can’t do that”. She came in knowing minimal about landscaping and has done everything to learn as much as possible in a very short time.

Thank you for all that you do and keep up the awesome job 🌸🌻🌼
