🌺 Pollinator Week Spotlight: Ruby-throated Hummingbird 🌺

Did you know Florida’s most common hummingbird, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, is an important pollinator?

These tiny aerial acrobats visit hundreds of flowers each day, sipping nectar with their long tongues while transferring pollen from bloom to bloom. Their work helps many native plants reproduce and keeps our ecosystems thriving.

Fun fact: Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 50 times per second and are capable of flying backward—making them one of nature’s most remarkable pollinators! 🌿🐦✨

You can attract Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to your yard by planting native nectar-rich flowers such as:
🌸 Coral Honeysuckle
🌸 Firebush
🌸 Tropical Sage
🌸 Cardinal Flower
🌸 Scarlet Beebalm

Skip the pesticides and provide a variety of native plants that bloom throughout the year to create a welcoming habitat for these incredible pollinators.

At Deep Roots Landscape Services, we love helping homeowners create beautiful native gardens that support hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and other essential pollinators.

🐦 Have you spotted a hummingbird in your garden recently? Share your photos in the comments!

🦋 Small But Mighty 🦋

To celebrate Pollinator Week, we’re focusing on some pollinators that aren’t as widely known.

Drumroll please… 🥁

✨ Cassius Blue - Leptotes cassius ✨

This little butterfly’s full adult wingspan is a dainty 3/4 to 15/16 inches long making it a wee little marvel. They have a variety of native larval host plants including:

🌼 Milkpea (Galactia spp.)

🌼 Blackbeads (Pithecellobium spp.)

🌼 Native Plumbago (Plumbago zeleynica)

Adult butterfly’s are distinguished by tan or light brown underside of wings and two eye spots. Males tend to be tan to bright blue while female are blueish white.

Have you seen any in your garden lately?

🦋 Native Plant Spotlight: Passion Vine

If you’re looking to support butterflies, few plants work harder than Florida’s native Passion Vine. Not only does it provide nectar for pollinators, but it also serves as a critical host plant for Gulf Fritillary, Zebra Longwing, and Julia butterflies.

Don’t be alarmed when caterpillars start eating the leaves—that’s exactly what this plant is meant to do! Every chewed leaf helps support the next generation of butterflies.

Plant native. Feed pollinators. Grow habitat. 🌿

🌙🦇 Night Garden Spotlight: Moonflower 🦇🌙

This month, as we celebrate Florida’s amazing bats, we’re also highlighting some of the beautiful plants that come alive after sunset!

✨ Moonflower (Ipomoea alba) is a stunning night-blooming vine native to Florida that produces large, fragrant white flowers that unfurl at dusk. These blooms seem to glow in the moonlight, creating a magical display in the evening garden.

Why do we love Moonflower?

🌿 Fast-growing and beautiful
🌙 Blooms open in the evening hours
🤍 Large, fragrant white flowers attract nighttime pollinators
🦋 Supports moths and other beneficial insects
🏡 Perfect for trellises, fences, and garden arbors

Many night-blooming flowers have evolved white or pale-colored blooms and strong fragrances to attract pollinators that are active after dark. By including plants like Moonflower in your landscape, you can help create habitat for the creatures that keep our nighttime ecosystems thriving.

Create Your Own Moon Garden

Consider planting:
🌙 Moonflower
🌙 Native Wild Coffee
🌙 Simpson’s Stopper
🌙 Firebush
🌙 Other native plants that provide food and shelter for nighttime wildlife

A garden doesn’t stop working when the sun goes down—it simply welcomes a whole new shift of visitors!

💚 At Deep Roots Landscape Services LLC, we love helping homeowners create landscapes that support wildlife both day and night.

⚠️ ⛔️ CAUTION ⚠️ ⛔️
While amazing for pollinators and a beautiful and showy plant, Moonflower is toxic if ingested by pets, livestock, or humans. If you have any animals or small children that could potentially ingest this plant, please plant out of reach or omit from your garden all together.
