This project started with an existing oval fish pond on the property dating back to the early 1900’s. The concept rendering was to build off that history and create a meandering river with an additional pond that would give views of the water from within the house.

We needed some elevation change to make the river and waterfalls work, so we built a circular stone seating bench surrounding a wood-burning fire pit. The back of the seating bench gave us the foundation we needed to start incorporating some elevation change into an otherwise flat lot.

Connecting the fire pit seating area, the house, and eventually leading out to a cantilevered slab over the pond is an irregular bluestone flagging pathway, stitched together with minimal jointing. The cantilevered slab features a Japanese-themed engraving of a dragon and koi by Joel from ELEMENTAL Stone Design as well as the veneered bench. Seating bench BlueStone fabrication by Raul Frausto.

We’re now rounding the corner with just some final touches left to do, but overall this has been an absolute pleasure of a project. The homeowner couldn’t be easier to work with and has played a huge role in the overall outcome of the project.

More pictures to come. Pictures really don’t do a project like this any justice, but we couldn’t help sharing it. This is one of those projects we couldn’t be happier to hand over to the client.

This backyard transformation was one of our favorite projects to bring to life.

The property presented a few challenges from the start. A small deck sat off the back of the house, the yard sloped toward the foundation, and the septic system occupied the back left corner. Those site constraints drove the design, resulting in two distinct outdoor living spaces that each serve a purpose.

The upper patio was designed as the gathering space, featuring a natural gas fire pit and high-top seating with plenty of room for games like co****le and entertaining family and friends.

A set of granite steps leads from the kitchen down to the lower patio, where you can head to the outdoor shower or relax in a comfortable seating area complete with a TV. There’s also space for outdoor dining, conveniently located next to the natural gas grill for easy entertaining.

To finish the project, we installed a row of 8-foot Green Giant arborvitaes, creating year-round privacy while providing a beautiful natural backdrop for the new outdoor living areas.

Every project is different, and great landscape design starts with understanding the property’s limitations and turning them into opportunities.
