Somewhere between "site layout" and "excavation" my crew unionized and demanded a recess. Negotiations were short. They won.

Measure twice. Then measure again. Then have your kids double-check you.

Layout day is where the house stops living on paper and starts living on the lot. Every wall, every corner, every utility pe*******on gets located NOW. An inch of sloppiness here becomes a nightmare at the foundation, a disaster at framing, and a legend at the roof.

The most expensive tool on any jobsite is still a $20 tape measure used carelessly.

The real crew of the Dog House build.

Yes, that's my son in the operator's seat (parked, keys out, ear pro on - safety first, always). And yes, those little hands learned to finish concrete this summer.

I'm not just building a house here. I'm building people who know what hard work feels like, what it means to make something with your hands, and what it looks like when Dad says he's going to do something and then does it.

Moving day - for the machines.

Mini excavator, skid steer, and a whole lot of diesel. Before anything goes UP, a few hundred yards of dirt have to come OUT. Site work is the least glamorous part of any build and one of the most important: get your grades, drainage, and compaction wrong here and the best foundation in the world won't save you.

We take our time on dirt work. The house you can't see below grade is the one holding up the house you can.

So what exactly is ICF? Let me break it down.

ICF stands for Insulated Concrete Forms - big hollow blocks of dense foam that stack like oversized LEGO. You stack them into walls, drop rebar inside, and fill the core with concrete. The foam stays on forever, giving you built-in insulation on BOTH sides of a solid concrete wall.

Day 1-
Every build starts the same way: a patch of dirt and a plan.

This lot doesn't look like much here. No walls, no driveway, no home - just possibilities (and one very unqualified site inspector on four legs).

People ask me where the hardest part of a build is. It's right here. Before the concrete, before the framing, you have to see the finished house standing on empty ground and commit to it.
