The Whitefield to Berlin (S136) transmission line weaves through state and federal public lands in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.

To rebuild those 27 miles, our subsidiary Harlan Electric Company navigated many difficult elements simultaneously: complex terrain, inclement weather, stringent environmental requirements, energized work, and managing crossings of many active recreation trails.

They replaced more than 200 structures and self-performed all the foundation drilling and successfully completed the project ahead of schedule, strengthening the region’s electric grid for years to come.

To prevent “Struck By” incidents:

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: Identify all high-energy hazards during your daily tailboard.
𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: Establish Direct Controls

For each of the high-energy hazards identified, mark which ones have a corresponding Direct Control at the time of initial observation. To be a Direct Control, a safeguard must meet all the following criteria:
✅ Specifically targeted to the high-energy source
✅ Effectively mitigates exposure to high energy when installed, verified, and used properly
✅ Effective even when someone makes a mistake

Safety starts with awareness and ends with action—make Direct Controls part of every tailboard discussion.
