We're hiring a freelance landscape designer in the Denver area.

What the role looks like: you'll travel to customer properties for site visits, scope the project, and put together designs focused on xeriscape and low-water landscaping. Paid hourly, up to 20 hours a week -- flexible enough to complement other work you're doing.

We're not looking for someone to push the same design on every yard. We're looking for someone who can look at a property, understand the soil, the sun, the client, and come back with something that actually belongs there.

Rock crevice gardens are one of our favorite things to build -- and this photo is exactly why.

Those deep burgundy rosettes are sempervivums tucked into sandstone crevices. The name literally means live forever. They store water in their leaves, thrive in full sun, and spread slowly without getting out of hand.

What we love most about these installs is the contrast: rough, heavy, ancient-looking stone against the tight geometric precision of a succulent rosette. Rugged and delicate at the same time. That tension is what makes crevice gardens so visually compelling -- and it happens at a detail scale most landscaping never reaches.

The smallest parts of a yard are often the most memorable.

Every now and then a job site throws you something unexpected.

We spotted this on one of our Denver projects — a coneflower doing double duty on a single stem. Before you say "that's two flowers" — you're technically right, but here's why.

It's called fasciation. In a normal coneflower, the plant grows from a tiny circular tip that produces one stem and one round flower head. With fasciation, that tip flattens out into a wide ribbon shape instead — producing what looks like two fused cones side by side. One stem. One plant. Two heads.

It's caused by a random genetic mutation, frost damage while the bud was forming, or a hormonal imbalance triggered by bacterial or viral infection. Totally harmless to the plant. Just nature doing something weird and wonderful.

Coneflowers are one of our most-used plants on Denver xeriscape projects — native to Colorado, drought-tolerant once established, and loved by pollinators. Turns out they can also be botanically surprising.

The question we get constantly: "isn't xeriscape just rocks?"

This is a Denver front yard.

Purple salvia. Yellow creeping blooms. Boulder accents. River rock edging. It runs on a fraction of the water a lawn would, and it comes back stronger every year — because these plants evolved for exactly this climate.

A well-designed xeriscape has a color sequence. Pasque flowers in March. Penstemon and salvia through summer. Rabbitbrush going gold in October. Most traditional lawns don't do that.
