It has been a while since Balogh Gardens has posted any sort of a personal note rather than sharing the posts or offerings of others. Generally I get around to writing an annual note of thanx at years end . That didn’t happen this year. This will be a note of a different sort. It will be a note of thanx - as always - and I guess it is at years end- but it will also be a note of a different type. It’s a note of an end, but also a note of a beginning. After nearly 30 years of blood - sweat and dirt - Balogh Gardens has officially closed it doors - effective at the end of the calendar 2025 growing season. For
Those folks that know Cathy and I quite well - the realization is that - as the expression goes - Time waits for no one. Balogh Gardens has been a part of our life for nearly half of our existence on this side of the void. When we started business with our infamous 1988 Honda Civic our girls were in Middle School. Now they have grade school children - our grandchildren. Cathy and I still had our Moms that visited regularly . Now we visit them at the same site and remember them. I’ve always wondered what my dad - the ultimate academician - would’ve thought of his youngest and most rogue son out of 3 making a living by digging in the dirt. I’ll never know that answer but speculation is he would’ve considered who he was dealing with and shrug. . . Cathy
Has lived this job with more dedication than anybody else I can think of - real or imagined. Hundreds of designs -literally hundreds - with no 2 being the same. And she knew where every single plant was on every single property. I. Kid. You. Not.
Cathy and I have been working for over 50 years. Cathy started when she was 14 at A&W and I started a couple of years later at old Pagliai’s with Crazy George and those red Nova’s. . .
Balogh Gardens came about as Cathy and I were wondering what to do with the rest of our life. Kinda a Mid -Life Crisis 10 years early. We passed flyers stating “Will W**d Your Property for $15/hr. . . The rest is history. ..
Our clients were simply the best. They let us try things and make mistakes . But they kept us - some for the entire history of the company. We saw their families grow also. We saw the different dogs - but never the same flower bed designs (Cathy).
It is difficult
To move on but - yeah - nothing lasts forever. The company now falls under the auspices of a very impressive established Green company located in Denver. You’ll know who the owner is and they took on our entire staff that wished to go with them. There is is plenty of room to grow. Cathy and I have productive plans for the next chapter on Planet Earth and we’ll do it pretty much how we’ve done everything - together. Had an employee one time with a company disagreement. One of us - either Cathy
Or myself - tried to pass the buck/issue on to the other. Employee stated she would have none of that. She stated “Everything is You Guys . . “. No room for individualism.
I ramble and the next chapter is upon us. I can’t say that I really feel like planning ANYTHING. I do know I’m not getting up at 4:45AM unless there’s some weird - ass eclipse goin’ on. Cathy and I simply wanna do what we’ve always done - and that is to take care of each other and realize how good things have been . Thanx .. . .

Before you plant this spring… pause. 🌱

Just in case you missed out on the reel for this one, here’s an infographic.

Many common landscape plants are invasive and provide little benefit to wildlife. Native species support birds, pollinators, and healthy ecosystems. It’s so important to always plant with purpose.

Choose plants that give back. Make your backyard a haven for pollinators and wildlife.

These plants are native to decoration 8 USA.

Look up! A breathtaking Total Lunar Eclipse is set to transform our bright white moon into a glowing copper “Blood Moon” for nearly a full hour.

For 58 minutes of totality, the Moon will shine in a ghostly red hue. Why? During totality, the only sunlight reaching the Moon passes through Earth’s atmosphere first—scattering blue light and leaving behind rich red tones. It’s as if every sunrise and sunset on Earth is lighting up the Moon all at once. 🌅🌍

Some vegetables defend themselves when grown in the right company.
These 9 pairings create natural pest barriers without a single spray.

- Tomatoes & Basil: Basil's methyl eugenol repels thrips and whiteflies from tomato foliage within a 2-foot radius
- Tomatoes & Marigolds: French marigold roots release alpha-terthienyl, killing root-knot nematodes in the surrounding soil
- Peppers & Nasturtiums: Nasturtiums act as a trap crop — aphids attack them first, sparing pepper plants entirely
- Carrots & Rosemary: Rosemary's volatile oils mask carrot scent from carrot rust flies during their May egg-laying window
- Cabbage & Dill: Dill flowers attract parasitic wasps that lay eggs inside cabbageworm caterpillars
- Squash & Radishes: Radishes planted around squash hills lure flea beetles away from squash seedlings
- Beans & Savory: Summer savory repels bean beetles while enhancing bean flavor through root proximity
- Eggplant & Catnip: Catnip releases nepetalactone, a compound 10 times more effective than DEET against flea beetles
- Cucumbers & Tansy: Tansy attracts ladybugs that consume cucumber beetles at a rate of 50 per day

Plant allies, not chemicals.

What's best to feed your backyard birds in cold weather? For most wild birds, seeds are the best source of high energy. And the seed that attracts the widest variety of birds, (so the mainstay for most backyard bird feeders), is the sunflower seed.

It's easy to DIY your own winter bird seed mix using these bird-friendly favorites, and is more efficient than store-bought mixes. In general, mixtures that contain red millet, oats, and other “fillers” are not attractive to most birds and can lead to a lot of waste as the birds sort through the mix.

Friedrich Nietzsche warns you, saying:

Do not fall victim to excessive idealism and believe that telling the truth will bring you closer to people. People love and reward those who can soothe them with illusions. Since ancient times, humanity has only punished those who speak the truth. If you want to stay among people, share their illusions. The truth is spoken only by those who are ready to depart.

"Annabel Lee" is Edgar Allan Poe's last completed poem, published in 1849 shortly before his death. It explores themes of love, loss, and the enduring power of memory.

Though no definitive proof exists, the poem is believed to be inspired by Poe's young wife, Virginia, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 24. This adds a layer of personal grief and mourning to the narrative.

The poem explores the depth and permanence of the narrator's love for Annabel Lee. He claims their love transcends even death and is the envy of angels. It also grapples with the grief and despair of losing a loved one, particularly young and innocent.

The poem has been adapted into various forms, including music, film, and visual art, solidifying its place in popular culture.

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingéd seraphs in Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my
bride, In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

“Three o’clock is always too late or too early for anything you want to do.”
― Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea

Time is never exactly where we want it to be. We’re either waiting, or regretting, but rarely inhabiting the moment we’re in. “perfect time” doesn’t exist. The absurdity is that life only happens in the now—whether it feels right or not.
