How many Guernsey yearlings does it take to put up an electric fence?
I don't know, but I've had this wagon in their pasture for 3 days leaving it overnight unattended, while I work on it and this is the first time they messed with it. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

RESULTS: He is growing bone!!! πŸ™Œ It is fairly straight but not entirely perfect, and it will likely be about 1/2" shorter than the other, but it is working.
They've replaced his cast with a tighter one since the leg has atrophied some. 4 more weeks of stall rest then we try again.
Today is Clarke's 6 week x ray to see if the cast is working.

My wild man has gotten sweet over the past few weeks. Before this leg break he would rarely even take a cookie from my hand.

It's so interesting to me seeing how Clarke uses his leg while it's cast in full extension like this. With his hair cut the rump structure is so much more visible. Fascinating.
This Friday will be 4 weeks in the cast. That's the minimum goal for staying comfortable in this one without having to go in for adjustments. The full goal is 6 weeks of this cast, then going in for an x ray through it to see if the bones have knit. Then they'll decide if he stays in this for possibly 2 more weeks, or if they're going to put him in a different one.

Did You Know: Every Guernsey in the United States is American born, but NOT every Guernsey born in the United States is an American Guernsey. Even ADGA goats that are the equivalent of BGS British Guernseys are considered Purebred, not American Guernseys. American Guernseys are not the highest level of Guernsey that you can breed.
Confused? Even some breeders don't understand the process and post misinformation making it worse. Here is some info from both British Goat Society (BGS) and the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) that can help clarify the steps to breeding up. You can see that the BGS top breed up level is British Guernsey, and the ADGA top breed up level is Purebred.
The steps for breeding a British Guernsey/Purebred Guernsey follow a 6 step process:
1. Identification Register (IR) This is how to record an unregistered female dairy goat of the accepted type of any age to start the breed up process
2. Supplementary Register (SR) Either Experimental or Grade Experimental in ADGA
3. Foundation Book (FB) Either Experimental or Grade Experimental in ADGA
4. Herd Book (HB1) *Does Considered American in ADGA, Bucks Experimental*
5. Herd Book (HB2) **Considered American in ADGA**
6. British Guernsey*1st generation BG Does and Bucks are considered American in ADGA, Subsequent gen does are Purebred, Bucks require one additional generation of breeding up to reach Purebred *
If you would like more information specifically on breeding up Guernseys and how to achieve it, that information is available to GGBoA members on our website in much more detail. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to GGBoA for official information. We have lots of resources to assist no matter what your Guernsey goals are!
