The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has unveiled the design of its transformative expansion and renovation project—the largest in the museum’s history.

SmithGroup is honored to lead the design of the new McGlothlin Wing II, which will enhance galleries, improve visitor experience, and strengthen the museum’s connection to its community and surroundings.

Our design is rooted in community input and a shared commitment to accessibility. We’re proud to partner with on a project that celebrates openness, accessibility, and the power of art to engage and inspire.

Join us on our design journey as we unveil the renderings for the Whiteriver Indian Hospital Replacement Project—a transformative 408,000 sq. ft. facility designed in collaboration with the Indian Health Service and the White Mountain Apache Tribe.

This new hospital will replace the existing facility on its 31-acre campus and expand access to comprehensive care for a growing population by integrating IHS programs with tribal health services.

Drawing inspiration from the White Mountain landscape and Apache traditions, the design integrates natural materials, daylight and sweeping views to foster calm and connection. Cultural stories, rituals, and palettes are woven throughout public and patient spaces, while outdoor courtyards and walking paths encourage spiritual reflection and community gathering. Every element—from spatial flow to material selection—is shaped to honor heritage, support holistic healing and honor the spirit of the people it serves.
