Tim Grindstaff saw a simple problem with staining new fences.

With oil-based stain, the wood had to dry first. That could mean waiting three or four weeks after the fence was built - plenty of time for the customer to change their mind.

Then Tim had an idea:

Why not use water-based stain?

Now they could build the fence one day and stain it the next.

That simple solution turned into a business. Before long, Tim had more work than he could keep up with - new fences, existing fences, decks, pressure washing and restaining.

Tim Grindstaff had just finished vocational school studying electrical wiring, and he had five job offers waiting for him.

Then his father-in-law called.

He needed a janitor at his church.

This was the man who had taken Tim under his wing. So Tim prayed about the decision, turned down the career opportunities in front of him, and took the janitor job.

Tim Grindstaff went to work in industrial construction the day after graduating high school in 1973.

Highways. Interstates. Steel factories. And then came the “glorious opportunity” to work on a sewer line 14 feet underground.

When the giant sewer snake got out of control, there wasn’t exactly anywhere to run.

Tim’s solution?

Turn around and take it.

The upside? He was making $7.50 an hour in 1973, at a time when he remembers other guys supporting families on around $3.50 an hour.

Construction paid well. But sometimes you damn sure earned it.
