Think that’s dirt? Look closer. 🔎
Bed bugs happen in mountain homes, too—and they don’t stay just in beds. These photos show why checking beyond the mattress matters.
Know what to look for:
• Live, reddish-brown bugs
• Dark, ink-like spots
• Shed skins and tiny pale eggs
• Rust-colored stains on bedding
Check mattress seams, headboards, upholstered furniture, and nearby cracks and crevices. Bites alone aren’t enough to identify bed bugs.
And having bed bugs doesn’t mean your home is dirty. They can hitchhike on luggage, clothing, and used furniture—even into a spotless home.
Traveling this fall? Check your sleeping area before unpacking, keep luggage off beds, and inspect secondhand furniture before bringing it inside.

Cold nights make warm homes appealing to mice. 🐭 They look for shelter and food, often using gaps around doors, garages, and utility lines to get inside.
Watch for droppings along walls or in cabinets, scratching sounds when the house is quiet, and gnaw marks on food packaging. Keep food sealed, clean up crumbs, and check door sweeps and other visible openings.

🐭 MOUSE DROPPINGS? FIND THE SOURCE.
Finding mouse droppings isn’t just a cleanup issue—it’s a sign that mice are actively using your home for food, shelter, or a travel route.
Droppings are often only the first clue. Gnaw marks, shredded nesting material, scratching sounds, grease marks along walls, and small entry gaps can all point to rodent activity. Mice can squeeze through surprisingly small openings, which makes garages, crawlspaces, utility penetrations, and gaps around doors common access points.
There’s also a health reason to take droppings seriously. Rodent droppings, urine, and nesting materials can carry harmful germs. Avoid sweeping or vacuuming dry droppings, since disturbing contaminated material can send particles into the air. CDC guidance recommends wetting contaminated areas thoroughly with disinfectant before removing the material.
And remember—removing the droppings doesn’t remove the mice. If new droppings continue to appear, there is still an active problem somewhere.

🦝 FREAKY FACT FRIDAY
Infected raccoons can shed millions of microscopic roundworm eggs in their f***s every day.
The parasite is called Baylisascaris procyonis, or raccoon roundworm. Its eggs become infectious after sitting in the environment for approximately 2–4 weeks—and can survive in soil for years.
If accidentally swallowed, the eggs can hatch and the larvae may travel through the body, including to the eyes or brain. Human infections are rare, but they can be extremely serious.
Raccoons often return to the same areas to leave droppings, creating contaminated “raccoon latrines.” Never sweep or vacuum dry raccoon f***s, and keep children and pets away from suspected areas.

🪳 FREAKY FACT FRIDAY
Cockroaches are tough — but the fact that they can survive without their heads isn’t even the biggest reason they’re so difficult to control.
We’ve been seeing cockroach activity on the rise here in Summit County and the surrounding mountain communities.
German cockroaches are especially concerning because they reproduce quickly, hide deep inside cracks, cabinets and appliances, and can easily hitchhike into even clean homes and businesses through boxes, deliveries, luggage and other belongings.
They’re primarily active at night, so seeing cockroaches during the daytime can actually be a sign of a heavier infestation. Their f***s, shed skins and saliva can also contribute to allergens and asthma symptoms.
And here’s today’s freaky fact: cockroaches don’t breathe through their mouths. They breathe through small openings along their bodies called spiracles, which is part of the reason they can survive for a period of time even after losing their heads.
The biggest takeaway? Don’t wait for a cockroach problem to become obvious. If you’re seeing one, especially during the day, there may be considerably more hiding nearby.

Think one carpenter ant is no big deal? Think again.
A mature carpenter ant colony can contain tens of thousands of ants — with some nests reaching around 50,000. 😳
But here’s the part that really matters: carpenter ants don’t eat wood like termites. They excavate it, carving out galleries to build and expand their nests. Over time, a large colony can leave behind some pretty serious damage—like what you see in the photo.
And they especially love moist, damaged, or decaying wood, which gives them an easier place to get established.
Seeing large black ants around your home? Don’t ignore them. The ants you see may only be a tiny fraction of what’s hiding inside.
