In May of 2018, G. Drake Masonry was asked to consult on an assessment of the tower at St. John's Catholic Church. That assessment report (by Artifex Architects & Engineers) turned into a successful restoration project completed in June of 2019, and this week Maine Preservation announced that the project is one of its 2020 Honor Award Winners! Many thanks to everyone who worked hard to make the project a success.
This next Honor Award Week high is an absolute stunner. Built in 1855, Saint John’s Catholic Church in Bangor is an elegant Gothic Revival style structure, designed by Patrick C. Keely, a renowned Irish-American architect based in Brooklyn, New York. Spurred by religious and communal pride by Bangor's Irish immigrant community, the church was, partly, a response to the the rise of nativism of the "Know Nothing" party in the mid-1800s. By 2017, the steeple was showing signs of distress, and was experiencing significant water intrusion and needed serious work to bring this important building back to its original condition. After securing a $65,000 grant form the Maine Steeples Fund, restoration work began by Artiflex A/E and Drake Masonry and included masonry repairs, plaster repairs and many other projects. This rehabilitation project not only repaired serious structural and aesthetic damage on an architecturally significant building, but has furthered the community’s use of the space. This church has served, and continues to serve, the region’s Catholic community along with the general population through a multitude of services.
