One of these days....The cold will be moving in.....And we need a fire again!....I have built and rebuilt many chimneys in my time and really pride myself on the fact mine draw no matter the weather and throw out heat. Important qulities in those old original cabins back in the day. One that didn't work made a miserable existence. Mine meet modern codes and are as safe as can be but a lot of the old ones I take down the logs are charred like charcoal but thankfully didn't get air to fully ignite. ~ The Log Whisperer

Not so many years ago.....Lots of hardships.....They did know....They wasn't worried....about every passing fad.....A roof and groceries.....Just basic was their need.....So they plowed the ground....And planted some seed.....Soon they had.....Veggies galore....And didn't nare one....Come from the store.....Raised some pigs and hunted for meat.....Took the old gun down....For the boys it was a treat....No work to do with the crops laid by....So they made every shot count.....
Because the ammo was high!

We take a lot things for granted Cabin Lovers. I can imagine life was a lot tougher when they had to raise and store up all they had and everybody was stuck inside eating it all up all Winter .

Time to Hone up my favorite meat cleaver Cabin Lovers ! Because it's almost 'Pig pickin' /Barbecue time here in the foothills of NC ! Here's my BBQ sauce recipe. Give it a try

The Log Whisperers Barbeque Sauce

1 qt. Worcestershire sauce
1 pint mustard
1/2 gal. ketchup
1 1/2 box brown sugar
a few shakes of Texas Pete
1/2 qt. apple cider vinegar

Mix first three ingredients together. Then put it in a pot and bring it to a boil.Add the other ingredients I cook it for 10 to 15 minutes. let cool and pour in bottles. does not need refrigeration . Makes 1 gal.

Happy Labor Day to all you Hard Working Cabin Lovers ! To some work is just a four letter word anymore but for those of us "still getting it" and realizing everyday we are able is a blessing, enjoy your day and the fruits of your labor !

Ecc 2:25- There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

Work is still a blessing Cabin Lovers. Good for the mind, body and soul but as I get older I realize it ain't always about the harvest we reap but about the seeds we've sown. Thank y'all for sowing kindness, encouragement and inspiration in The Log Whisperer's world !

I helped my dad and great uncle put up roof trusses for the first time when I was 16 . Feeling blessed to still be doing it 46 years later. I hope I've learned a thing or two over the years because to be young and stupid is one thing. To be old and stupid is another. 🤣

THE HISTORY OF "LEATHER BRITCHES "
( Dried green beans)

The practice of making leather britches most likely originated with the Cherokee people. They would thread the beans onto a rawhide cord and hang them over a slow fire to dry, protecting them from rot and insects. The Europeans who settled in Appalachia picked up this tradition, stringing beans and hanging them from rafters, porches, and fireplaces.

Even after the popularity of home canning , leather britches remained a staple throughout the Appalachian Mountains .

Soak them in water a few hours before slow cooking them with some fat back . 😋
