🪵✨ THE HERMOSA LEGACY REVIVAL ✨🪵

HERE WE GO AGAIN! 🙌🏽🏔️

I’ve FINALLY made it through enough of our content to introduce you to another incredible cabin revival we’ve been working on!

Nestled in the beautiful North Hermosa Valley of Durango, just south of Celadon, sits another remarkable log home built by the late, locally renowned Larry Barns. ❤️

With Larry’s passing just this week, this restoration holds an especially meaningful place in our hearts.

We’ve now had the incredible honor of restoring SEVEN of his log homes! Preserving his craftsmanship and helping these beautiful homes live on for generations is something we’re truly grateful to be part of. 🪵

Now, let’s talk about what we’re getting ourselves into! 😮‍💨

💦 EXTENSIVE LOG ROT: Years of water splashing back against the lower logs have caused significant deterioration. We’re replacing SEVEN massive logs, each measuring approximately 26 FEET LONG!

☀️ FAILING ACRYLIC FINISH: This home was previously coated in an acrylic-based product applied nearly ¼ inch thick in places! Years of intense southern sun exposure have left the finish white, cloudy, and deteriorating.

✨ THE PLAN: Remove the old failing finish, replace the deteriorated logs, and restore this beauty with fresh stain, caulking, and c***king!

This is the dirty, difficult, physically demanding work that we absolutely LIVE FOR! 💪🏽🪵

We’re not just restoring cabins. We’re preserving craftsmanship, protecting history, and giving these beautiful homes another chapter.

Rest in peace, Larry. Your legacy lives on through the homes you built. ❤️

THIS is the payoff. 😍

Taking a weathered home and bringing it back to life, while preserving all the beautiful character that makes it so special.

From the gorgeous Fawn stain and Stone c***king to the restored redwood decks, every detail came together so beautifully.

I am absolutely IN LOVE with this transformation. 🥹🤎

Dave and I are so incredibly grateful that we get to call this our life’s work.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL CABIN REVIVAL COMING TOGETHER! 🤎🏡👏🏽

And just like that, we’re wrapping up the c***king on another beautiful home.

Sometimes I look around at the work Dave and I are doing, the places this career takes us, and the opportunities we’ve been given, and I genuinely can’t believe this is our life.

We are so incredibly grateful. 🥹🤎

This craft is not easy.

It’s physically demanding, incredibly detailed, and requires more patience than most people will ever realize.

But goodness, do we LOVE it.

There’s something so special about taking a home that’s weathered decades of Colorado seasons and giving it the attention, care, and craftsmanship it deserves.

And then getting to stand back and admire what we’ve accomplished with our own hands.

THAT feeling never gets old. 🥹

To every homeowner who has trusted us with their home, every person who has recommended our business, and everyone who follows along as we chase these dreams…

The obvious NOs and the VERY obvious YESes of our job. 😂🪵👏🏽

❌ Rotten wood, failed c***king, hidden surprises, and years of neglected maintenance.

✅ Beautiful transformations, fresh stain, perfectly finished c***king, and bringing these incredible homes back to life.

Some parts of this job are just an immediate NOOOO. 😂

And other parts? An enthusiastic YESSSSS! 😍🙌🏽

But the funny thing is, you can’t have all those beautiful YES moments without getting your hands dirty and tackling the NOs first.

And somehow, we absolutely LOVE all of it. 🤎

The ugly, the pretty, and everything in between. That’s restoration, baby! 🏡✨

Listening to the peaceful babbling brook as we get to work this morning. 🌿💦

There’s something so special about starting our workday surrounded by the sounds of nature.

The fresh mountain air, the sound of flowing water, and the opportunity to spend our days restoring beautiful homes in some of Colorado’s most incredible places. 🪵🏡

Sometimes I just have to stop, take it all in, and appreciate how fortunate we are to do what we love.

Another beautiful morning, another cabin, and another day doing what we love! 🤎🌲

Wonder what the flowers think of their new backdrop this morning… 🌿💜

They’ve been sitting here watching us tear this wall apart piece by piece, remove 25 years of failed c***king, clean everything up, stain this beautiful old wood, install new backer rod, and finally hand finish every line of fresh Stone c***king.

And now they woke up to THIS. 😍

Freshly restored.
Freshly c***ked.
Sealed up tight.
And looking absolutely beautiful in the morning sunshine. ☀️

I think the flowers approve. 💜🙂

It’s these little views during a restoration that make me stop for a second and appreciate just how much a home can change.

THE MOMENT WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR… CHINKING! 👏🏽🤎

After all the cleaning, removing the old failed c***king, repairing deteriorated boards, staining, and bringing those beautiful decks back to life, we are FINALLY ready to start putting this home back together.

But beautiful c***king starts with what you don’t see.

Proper backer rod installation.

We’re installing open cell backer rod throughout every c***k course, creating a nice, consistent surface and controlling the depth of our new c***king.

And if you’ve been following this restoration from the beginning, you know just how important this step is.

The original backer rod was installed inconsistently 25 years ago, leaving the c***king extremely thin in some areas and incredibly thick in others. After years of expansion, contraction, and Colorado weather, the system eventually cracked and failed.

We removed ALL of it.

And now we get to rebuild it correctly. 👏🏽

For this home, we chose Stone c***king against that gorgeous Fawn stain, and OH MY GOSH. 😍

That combination is absolutely beautiful.

Wait until the last few seconds for that up close view of the finished c***king. 🤌🏽

Clean. Consistent. Hand finished. And designed to move with this home for years to come.

After everything we’ve uncovered and repaired on this project, seeing those beautiful new c***king lines going in might be my favorite part yet. 🤎

THIS is the payoff for all that preparation.

Apparently every restoration project needs a final inspection, and Marshmallow takes his job VERY seriously.

He came over to check out the freshly resurfaced redwood deck and somehow immediately found the best lighting, the prettiest flower, and his angle. 😂

I mean… LOOK AT HIM.

Forget the deck restoration. This is officially Marshmallow’s photoshoot. 💅🏽😂

He may not contribute much to the actual labor around here, but he certainly keeps morale high and makes sure our finished projects are properly modeled.

STEP FOUR: REPAIRS + A LITTLE DECK REVIVAL 🤎👏🏽

Before we move on to c***king and caulking, this home needed a few more things taken care of.

Take a look at the mycelium that had completely taken over these bottom boards. 😳

This is exactly why we talk so much about water management around wood homes.

Without gutters in these areas, the splashback is INTENSE. Rain and melting snow hit the ground and splash right back onto those lower boards. Over years of repeated moisture exposure, deterioration eventually takes over.

So out with the rotten wood. 👋🏽

We removed the damaged boards, added a Bituthene moisture barrier behind these vulnerable areas for additional protection, then headed to our local lumber mill to find replacement boards.

And because we didn’t want shiny new lumber sticking out against all of this beautifully aged wood, we were able to source older boards, cut them to size, stain them, and install them back into the home. 🤎

But somewhere along the way, this project grew a little bit. 😂

Once the house was freshly stained and looking beautiful again, the homeowner looked at the decks and realized just how weathered they had become.

So naturally…

the decks joined the revival too. 😂👏🏽

I completely resurfaced them back down to that gorgeous redwood. Unfortunately, I was so busy doing it that I didn’t get a single video of the process. 🤦🏽‍♀️

But LOOK at the difference!

For the finish, we’re using clear with just a touch of Golden Honey added to it. Enough warmth to make that beautiful redwood POP without covering up its natural color, grain, and character. 😍

New boards installed.
Moisture protection added.
Rotten material removed.
Decks resurfaced.
Redwood brought back to LIFE. 👏🏽

Sometimes restoration means sticking to the original plan…

And sometimes you make one part of the house so beautiful that everything next to it starts asking for attention too. 😂

Now we’re REALLY ready for the next phase…
